Gen 4 1999 - ATF question

Hi everyone -
Last month I went to the workshop and they changed the ATF by draining (opened the bottom plug and refilled from the dipstick via the funnel), and changed the gear oil by pumping it from the bottom.

I am about to arrange an appt for next month to change the ATF again as scheduled until I heard from fellow Camry owners that the ATF has two compartments to fill - can anyone show me where the second compartment is btw?

thanks

On the 98 Camry there is a separate differential case, which can be drained and refilled separately from the transmission. This is probably also true for 99 model, since it is
Gen 4. The link here shows the differential, with cooling ribs, looking from the driver side wheel access panel. There is a 10mm hex drain bolt at the bottom, and a 17mm bolt fill hole on the side adjacent to the rib extrusions.

Be prepared for interesting task when refilling differential case through side bolt. Need to have hand pump or very long funnel tube. ....Not much space to work with .... maybe 2 or 3 inches.

Definitely suggest removing the transmission pan and washing out the powdery iron dust ... almost like talcum powder. Flushing treatment doesn't appear to be very effective. ... Not a complicated job. .... Need new transmission pan gasket. Repair manual says that it is not a good idea to invert transmission ... due to debris and dust in pan getting into valve body. There is also a strainer, which is easily removed and cleaned. ... Didn't notice much of anything on or in this part.

What do you mean you changed the gear oil? If you have an automatic, you should not be putting gear oil in anything.

So that's what was meant by having two separate compartments - yes my mechanic drained the differential oil then the ATF - he then pushed the hand-pumped steelbraided hose in for the gear oil while after that, he filled in Toyota original ATF via the dipstick with a funnel. The drained ATF was really black!!

That was a couple of weeks ago - now I find that my shifting is smoother, and acceleration has quickened as the tacho meter goes up to 2k very easily - will be going in again to drain and refill the ATF in three weeks time since I do not use the car often

The differential and the transmission both use Dexron III ATF. I hope when you say gear oil you mean ATF except that it's going into the differential.

dexron 3 is correct in diff and transaxle, but the easier way to fill the diff is to take out the fill plug, then remove the vss sensor on top of the diff. Use a funnel and fill till fluid runs out the fill plug hole No special pumps or special tools required......
