Hmmm... although that scenario doesn't apply to me, it could help with diagnosing the problem. Thanks for the info.

When you do find out what is happening with your car feel free to come back and report your findings.

I had all 4 brakes turned and for a few weeks it was smooth. I thought it was fixed. I guess not. Now I'm thinking it's a bearing issue in the rear for 4 reasons... 1) it came back quickly, but not nearly as bad, 2) the car vibrates at speeds over 40, 3) occasionally there's a high pitched squeal coming from the rear at very low speeds and 4) with the rear passenger drum off and turning the axle by hand, I can hear a faint clicking noise. Also, at low speeds with the brake depressed slightly, I can hear a rear drum hitting the pads with each revolution... probably a warped drum.

Is there a reliable way to determine if my bearings are on their way out? I'd rather not have the drums turned and/or replaced a few times a year.

^ To test your wheel bearing, jack up your car (use jack stands as learned in a recent thread) and spin your wheel. While the wheel is spinning hold onto your suspension spring. If you feel a decent vibration in the spring your wheel bearing is shot.
