3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So i just tested my car today and It is acting as if it has an LSD.
I first noticed it Friday when I was installing the modified passenger side axle. With the tranny in neutral, I spun the axle/brake rotor forward, and the drivers side would roll forward, when I spun it backwards, the driver's side spun backwards, like an LSD. I put the tranny in gear and couldn't spin either side, like an LSD. Today, after a few hard launches and some hard second gear shifts, it always spun both tires. I have a nice PAIR of black lines down my driveway.
i dont even think they do but that kinda ill like i wouldl jsut leave it no questions asked. the only thing i can think of is that you might of bought it from some one who and put one in assuming you bouhgt it from some esle or junk yard
don't think so....though I never really did much research on LSD's either since on our cars it's a bit of a hefty sum to get and not quite worth it on the most part.
but my tranny does the exact same thing that you described...
I know what you're thinking though....I've always heard that with open differentials, the axles should spin in the opposite direction...though that in itself has never made that much sense to me either. But then again, I've never done much research on trannys....I'm sure that somebody here can enlighten us though.

My wheels spin in the opposite direction and I will leave 1 black like if I ever attempt a burnout..... So there is a chance?
PS: maybe that tranny was transplanted from something like a Celica and it had a LSD installed? Who knows.
Celicas never had an E trans, except in the All-trac, but this tranny didn't have the transfer case. Besides the MR2, I'm not sure what FWD car the tranny could have come out of. The MR2 LSD should bolt into the Camry tranny, but would require the use of LSD axles. I have the non-LSD axles. It seems that at least one other person has a tranny that does the same thing. I think I need to get the tech specs from the Toyota tech site and look at the tranny. Usually on a diff, you can see through from one side to the other. You can't do that on this diff. On the MR2, on the LSD diffs, you can see through them and not on the non-LSD.
well, that would be a pretty easy way yot tell then...
I know for sure that I can't see through my diff
and to the best of my knowledge, you don't need LSD axles for our trannys. not many people have an lsd for the e153, but some do, and no new axles were needed.

and from what I can tell, only the inside spins- which is an open diff.
that, and I would presume that they wouldnt' come with an lsd- otherwise there would be no point in selling a kazz lsd or trd lsd for our trannys
So, with your tranny, your car will spin both tires from a standing start, but spin the inside tire going around a corner?
Even if the tranny did come with an LSD, there would still be a reason for TRD and KAZZ to make an LSD for this tranny. There are lots of these trannys without an LSD now. Plus there are a few different types of LSDs available these days. Some are better suited for different types of racing than the others. In my case, something is better than nothing, which is probably what I have, .
Anyway, I have an auto-cross in a week, so I guess I'll find out first-hand how the diff is going to react in corners with hard accelation.
long story short, let's just say that I'd put my money on the fact that we don't have an lsd
because when I come to think about it, even with my auto tranny, the wheels reacted the same way to turning by hand (or more noitceably, when torquing down the lugnuts with the car in the air)- the wheels still spin the same way
so it is no surprise that with the 5speed, it does the same thing

After competing with the car in its first auto-cross since the swap, I can say for sure that it is definitely not an LSD (not a surprise). It launches nice when starting a race but does spin the inside tire under hard acceleration in tight corners. Now I need better tires. Time for slicks I guess.
