3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Car was sitting for two months. Today when I started it had a rough idle and after a minute or so, it died. Tried starting it again and it would not start until i gave it gas. Once i let off the gas the rpms would drop and car would stall. In order to start it i would have to give it gas and keep the rpms up to keep it running. Drove around the neighbor hood trying to keep the rpms from going too low(below 600 rpms) but most times when i would slow down or come to a stop it would stall.
I cleaned the throttle body, thinking it might be sticking, but i didn't help. Now i'm thinking its either a sticking egr valve or a clogged fuel filter. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.
My car does the same after sitting on a hill for a couple of days, but after a while it idles smoothly. I dont know what the problem is if you figure it out let us know, it could solve my problem

Well, I cleaned the IAC valve in an indirect way - when I cleaned the TB I got a good bit of cleaner down there and blew it out with compressed air. Usually works on most cars I work on.
I don't want to threadjack with my corolla procedures, but if you read the thread there, the light came back on and now the car idles properly (if somewhat high).
This leads me to believe I still have a fault in the EGR system, as does the OP. I've read a bunch of EGR threads, and chances are that the EGR valve itself isn't bad (although it can be). I believe my fault in in the EGR modulator causing an internal vacuum leak at idle.
To the OP: I'd clean out your EGR valve with some TB cleaner. You've already cleaned the TB and IAC, so thats good. If you still have the stalling problem, search for the test for the EGR modulator (you'll need a vacuum pump, but you can do it with compressed air also). You'll probably find that the seal in the EGR modulator is bad, apparently they fail often.

its a one way street Vemon, so it wont sit there facing the opposite way of the other cars on a one way for a couple of days without being noticed so i cant park the opposite way. Also i ahve teh CEL on with the p0401 which is EGR related so mi not sure, but even before i ahd the code on i would have to hold the gas a bit until it decides wit want to idle on its own.

Uhh...bad gas? 2 months of sitting..you should have put some stabil in there. Id drain the gas and put new gas in.
Thats what I was thinking, because I know seasonal devices like lawnmowers or snow blowers usually dont start if gas has been in there for several months.
If it stalls right away, it is probably not the EGR valve unless it was already stuck open when the car was last driven. If you suspect the EGR valve, try tapping it with a wrench a few times to see if the engine settles down. It's more likley the IAC than the EGR if it is from a cold start at idle. It can also be the intake temp sensor or manifold or MAP sensor which causes the engine to run too lean at startup.
Another thing to check is to remove the gas cap, then re-install. If you get a big woosh sound, the cap valve may not be working properly. As well, try pinching off your charcoal evap cannister hose to the engine to see what happens.
