High Idle, PO441 Code & Poor MPG.

Vehicle:
1998 5SFE Auto Camry
Mileage: 153k miles
Driving Style: My mom drives it around 3 - 4k a year in Suburbia like an old lady.

BACKGROUND INFO
=============

The engine was rebuilt at 143k, as when I bought it, it had a bearing sanded almost through in the bottom end. During the rebuild, I ended up doing a bore job complete with new pistons and rings(and 1 rod), the head was resurfaced and the crank was ground and new bearings were installed. New seals throughout, new timing belt and water pump as well. It runs and drives fine.

I also was able to make PepBoys honor a misprinted coupon for $20 Bosch O2 Sensors and I bought both up and downstream sensors and installed those. It helped economy reach high teens and low 20s as far as city/highway mpg. The fuel filter, IAC and many other economy related items were replaced during the rebuild.

I installed new NGK wires, and some cheapy autolite plugs(may be an issue from what I've heard, but they've been great in all of our domestics). Oil is changed every 3k and was switched to Mobil 1 oil and Mobil 1 Filters after 1k miles after the rebuild.

PROBLEMS
========
  • The Idle at start goes way high(1500 - 2000RPM) and stays there for several minutes, shouldn't take that long. Once warm it settles down.
  • Fuel Economy is never near what it should, a rebuilt engine gets less, but it gets around 22 on the highway driving real easy.
  • It has a check engine light for the EVAP system, the gas cap has been replaced but it's still there. All of the hoses going to the VSV have been replaced as well. How bad could this effect fuel economy?
Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

Bosch O2 sensors SUCK on the camry. Id replace those with NGK or Denso brand.

check www.sparkplugs.com and get the universal ones and just solder your original connector inline.

Ill be replacing mine soon..as im having problems getting good gas mileage as well.
