3rd Generation 94 Camry stalling / Lurching on take off

I have a 94 v-6 Camry that has recently begun to stall and lurch forward on take off from stand still. Once I get going the problem seems to go away. It only does it when I first take off. There doesn't seem to be any missing at idle when in gear, but as soon as I hit the gas, it starts to pick up and drop off repeatedly until it gets up in revs.

Any ideas?

Thanks

sounds like a misfire, or lack of fuel pressure, or a air flow meter problem. When was your last tune up?

Re: Tune Up

I have kept the oil changed and air filter changed regularly. I replaced the fuel filter last weekend and ran a bottle of Lucas injector cleaner through. When I was changing the fuel filter I cleaned the throttle body as far as I could reach with a rag and throttle cleaner, and blew out the air filter pretty well. I also noticed that there is a crack in my air intake hose downstream of the Flow sensor, so I am planning to replace the hose ASAP, but didn't think that it was the cause if this problem. I haven't changed the plugs because I'll have to pull the frickin manifold to get to the back three.

It could be the problem. Use some duct tape to temporarily seal the crack and as a test. If your problem goes away, your replacement hose will permanently solve the problem.

If that does not solve the problem, I would next look at ignition system componets. They are the usual culprits when a car misses under load.

the crack in your intake hose will definitely cause irratic behavior, because you have unmetered air coming into the engine that the ecu doesn't know about. Fix that A.S.A.P before you start spending money on stuff you don't need. I agree with gerber totally the duct tape is a good diagnostic tip, and then move on to ignition if you still have a problem.

Thanks Mike and Kain. Good call on the duct tape. I looked at the intake hose again and what had first looked like a crack turned out to be more of an all the way around split. I lined it back up and taped it 3-4 times around and pretty tight. On the next start I dropped it into gear and held down the brake while pressing the gas pedal so that the engine was under strain. No miss, lope, stall, nothing. In fact, I think it's better than before the problem showed up. I would say that is b/c of the new fuel filter and the Lucas I ran through it. I am ordering a new hose ASAP.

Glad I could help.

I think it runs better and probably smoother becuse you cleaned the throttle body. It's amzing how much this little service helps the engine run smoother, especially if it hasn't been done for quite some time.

This might be completely off but my friends sisters subaru legacy GT did this exact same thing and we deducted it was because of the common problem with all subaru's, bad head gasket. I really hope that's not your problem.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's totally unrelated to the head gasket since a little Redneck engineering and a roll of duct tape seems to have eliminated the problem. Plus there are no other signs that it would be the head gasket: Overheating, Condensation in the oil, blue smoke, etc.

My 92 is doing the same thing. Could it be engine mounts?
