3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My car is a 95 camry le..5sfe 2.2l On the cap, it says 10w30, but I accidently put 5w30. How will this affect my car? Also one more question: What type of Oil do you guys use? What company oil and filter? Thanks
Any major brand oil will be fine for 5000 miles. 10W-30 and 5W-30 are not a problem. 5W-30 will flow better at lower temperatures, but when warm, they are equal. 5W-30 is sometimes made from better stock than 10W-30.
The only filters I use are Napa Gold 1394 and 1396, and Purolator L14476, PL14476, L14477, and PL14477. The Purolator filters starting with P are a step up from the ones that start with L. Toyota filters would work fine also, but there is no dealer near me.
you can order a filter from toyota online, but it cost a bit more. i am poor so i get a high performance bosch filter, i think. its only lik 8 bucks. and i use 5W-30.
Napa Gold, which is a rebadged Wix, typically costs about $6 Purolator Premium (white can) runs $2.50 to $5 and the Purolator Pure One (blue can) costs about $4 to $6. Performance will be at least on par compared to Bosch.
Sorry to jack his thread BUt... I wanted to know what would happen if I put in synthetic oil in my 97 4cyl? I normally put in afew quarts of regular oil (10w or 5w) and a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil. Runs great but just curious about the synthetic.
The major oil company’s state one can switch back and forth between synthetic and mineral oil or mix and match. There are oils that are a combo of mineral and synthetic.
I use the cheapest name brand oil I can find on sale and Wix filters.
also once you switch, you shouldn't switch back to natural
This is more of a myth than anything.
Synthetic oil is thicker than regular oil..and the reason people say not to switch back is probably because the thinner, regular oil is easier to leak than the thicker synthetic oil if there are small leaks....or more leaks could 'show themselves' if one switches from the thicker to the thinner oil.
My camry has 322,000 miles on it and has NEVER seen synthetic oil. The engine is still strong (though I have a small leak by the timing belt which I will fix as soon as money/time allows). I had a 92 accord that ran synthetic and had about 270,000 miles on it when it got towed away from being totalled out from an insurance claim. That engine was strong as well.
To tell you the truth...im glad to FINALLY be back to running regular, LESS EXPENSIVE oil

all i know about synthetic is that you still have to change every 3K miles. i believe it has a better temp resistance.
Wrong. Synthetic oil will last to at least 5000 miles like regular oil, if not longer. Changing any oil at 3000 miles is excessive and a waste.

Use whatever oil you like. Changing from synthetic to regular does nothing. If it did, the 5S-FE motor in my 00 Camry would have been dead long before I crashed it.
here is what someone wrote in another thread from customer care -
"However, it still bothers me that Toyota, on it's Customer Care Site, continues to state that if you go with Synthetic oil, you should not switch back. This is their statement: "If you decide to use synthetic oil for the engine, it is best not to switch until the first scheduled oil change. Synthetic oil should meet the specifications provided in your Owner's Manual. If synthetic oil is used, Toyota recommends that you continue to observe the oil change intervals laid forth in the Scheduled Maintenance Guide. Also, once synthetic oil is used, you should keep using it and not switch back and forth with natural petroleum-based oil". It just seems like there is something about Toyota engines that may cause a problem by switching oils, but they will not tell me what it is."
You can order OEM Toyo filters here and thay are not that costley.
Yes you can switch or mix both types of oil ( what do you think Syn Blend is?)
5/30w is recomended in the manual for cold temps.
