knocking sound when cold

Hi,

about 1 kmiles ago i've changed the timing belt (etc.). Now, when the car is cold i hear a knocking sound at ~1500 rpm and higher. The sound comes from the valve cover area. When the car warms up (after ~5-10 mins) the knocking goes away completely.
What is it?
How to fix it?

Thanks.

I have this same problem. Right when i start the car and start driving i hear the knocking, but it goes away after driving around for a few minutes. It sounds like a loose shield or something. I haven't had the chance to check out the problem. Anyone have any ideas on what it might be?

off the top of my head a bad t-belt idler a loose front cover, p/s belt hitting the t-belt cover, not sure exactly but if it just started after t-belt install something is up if we are talking 5s-fe then you might not have got the belt tight enough and its slapping the cover as it turns. happy hunting...

... maybe remove top timing belt cover and examine upper region of belt for slack. Should be relatively little deflection on either side of cam shaft pulley. .... also look at symmetry of deflection .... should be about the same with respect to cam pulley. .... Probably check lineup of timing marks while you are there.

... There is a specific method to be used when finally tightening idler pulley to complete timing belt installation .... after timing marks are aligned ... involves rotating crankshaft so many turns, etc. ... see repair manual section. .... might as well check this as well.

Hi all again,

As I said the sounds comes from the valve cover area, not the TB cover area. The TB is silent and nice, I've followed all the proper procedures for setting the correct tension of the TB. I thought that from my post you would immediately find it out that I suspect the valve timing/valve gap settings. Now I am a bit worried about my TB since none of you said anything about valves. But anyway there is nothing in the TB area (except the WP probably) that changes the temperature as the engine warms up.

.... my post was not so much concerned about the timing belt itself, rather what it does... positioning the cam shafts. .... Just guessing though ..... maybe something to check out if you can't come up with anything else.
