4-cyl swap
Hi guys, first time post here.
I have a 1993 Camry LE with the 4-cyl and auto. Recently, the engine took a dump on me. When I got the car, it already had an oil leak. I kept my eye on the engine level quite often. Despite that, the engine died on me coming back from school last week. It was hard to start after that and I had to give it gas to keep it running or else it would die. After that, I would hear tapping noises from the engine head.
The car's been parked ever since and I've only started it up for a few seconds at a time to hear more distinctly what the noise was like. The thing I noticed is that when it's cold, the engine will stay perfectly running without shaking so I'm pretty sure the rotating assembly is still in good shape.
I personally think the valvetrain is shot but I haven't had the time to tear the engine open yet. So right now I'm actively searching for a 5SFE and a manual transmission to do a tranny swap at the same time. I've searched the forums for threads regarding transmission swaps and I saw a link about someone swapping a manual tranny in a V6 model, but the links don't work anymore?
So far, I've found a 5SFE and a manual transmission out of a 1991 Celica with around 165,000KMs on it. The guy doesn't know if the engine runs or not, but he was told by the previous owner that it did and the tranny has apparantly been rebuilt so therefore has 0 mileage on it.
My question is, will all of his stuff fit in my Camry? I'm questioning whether the shifter cables, shifter, brake pedal assembly and other assorted parts would work? Do I need Camry specific axles? I heard that I might also need to swap hubs? Is this true? Also, he doesn't have the ECU, so if I use my current ECU, is there a way to trick the car into thinking that everything is fine and that the auto tranny is still there?
Thanks again guys!
Nick
Also, if I understand right, I need the following parts:
Engine
Tranny
Clutch
Flywheel
Clutch Master Cylinder
Shifter Cables
Shifter
ECU
Did I miss anything?
