Unhappy Bad bad news

well guys, I think this is the end of my 96.... I blew the tranny yesterday and im getting quoted about $2,000 to fix it. We think either the planetary or differential blew apart and we are not sure if the case is saveable considering it was leaking fluid after it blew. So as a heads up there may be a part out if we decide not to fix it. I was able to get 190k out of the tranny at least.

If you find the right mechanic, they can do it for as little as 850.

Why not get a used transmission from the junkyard or from someone selling on the boards? Do a few flushes and change the filter on it.

or in all seriousness, just pick up an old tranny and drop it in

if labor isn't an issue, you can pick one up for a couple hundred bucks and have it dealt with

You can also look into doing an auto to manual swap.

I found a used tranny with 57,000miles on it in good condition for $550 from a junkyard, the only problem is that its the same place i tried to get a replacement engine and they sent me a Japanese version which wouldnt fit and the next one they gave me they told me it was a good engine with no problems and it turned out to have bent rods and a drilled cat. What do you think?

check ebay, just remember the '96 with the 5SFE was the first year of the transmission with the ECT. As to the Japanese version not fitting, itf it was a 2.2 liter 5SFE and not a 3SFE the one that was swapped into my '96 went in without too much issue, just treat it as a long block and swap everything else (wiring, accessories, exhaust, etc.

alright, so as of right now, im looking at $520 to pull and replace the tranny, $550 for a used tranny, plus the cost of seals, roughly $1,100 for the job. do you think this is fair?
