3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
OK here's some details: I cranked the car but only turned the key for about a second(my fault) so it didnt start. I tried to recrank it but now just keeps turning. I checked for spark, gas - checked ok. I did notice 2 cracks in the intake hose but I taped those up....still nothing. Can anyone suggest anything?
I thought about the Air Flow Meter but wouldnt the check engine light be on, mine is not?
Also, is it possible that i put too much gas in the engine when i tried to turn it the first & second time...so it's "flooded"?
Well, if you checked and verified spark and fuel, then you'd be missing either air or compression. Does it sound different at all now when it cranks? When timing belts break, they usually do so at start up.
When you checked for spark, did you pull the plug(s) out?
I unplugged the IAT(Intake Air Temperature) sensor, tried to start it & and it started right up but the check engine light was on. I plugged it back in & now everthing seems fine. Starts up normal without engine light.
I don't know exactly why this would be keeping the car from starting. According to the Haynes manual, it says it "acts as a resistor which changes value according to the temperature of the air entering the engine."
Well, does this mean I need to clean or replace something? I cleaned the throttle body about 8 months ago & plan on changing the PCV valve and air filter.
Is there anything else I should think about replacing?

Several sensors supply data to the engine control unit. The ECU uses the factors to determine values such as injector pulse width, spark timing, etc. If your IAT is out of spec, you might not have an immediate start combination .... too rich, too lean, or something else.
In the diagnostic section of the repair manual, there is a description of how to test the IAT using a resistance meter ... giving resistance values at various temperatures.
