Replacing Valve Cover Gasket - to seal or not to seal?

OK, I replaced my valve cover gasket about a year ago. I cleaned both surfaces very good, didnt scrape/gouge the aluminum & applied sealant to the "eight points". Well, it's leaking again and I tried tightening the nuts...nothing. I read around in the forums that some people weren't using the sealant and it worked fine.

I am wondering what I did wrong. I didnt use a torque wrench but is it necessary? I mean, I know its tight.

Anybody have the same problems?

Ive bought a new gasket with the tube nut gaskets and Im ready to go. Any info will be helpful.

Use a toyota oem gasket, and the nuts should be tightened evenly, use sealant only in the corners specified by the repair manual. I will say it is common on the 5s-fe for the valve cover gasket and distributor o-ring to leak. I also recommend replaceing the tube seals with each v/c gasket change.

OK, what's the difference between the OEM part and the one I bought from Advance? Also, are you saying that it's possible to leak even when using the OEM?

the difference in parts will be the elasticity and quality of the rubber the gasket is made of. Your advance part may fit but won't retain its elasticity as long as a oe gasket...so it leaks quicker. Anyhow if you don't mind doing it once a year or so go ahead and use aftermarket, but if you want one to last awhile get OE.

Which side of the gasket do you apply the sealant to? The cover side or the engine side?
