Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
1992 Camry, just got of the highway after a 140km drive and is running bad....
Literrally I came off the highway it was runnning fine down the main streets, but I get into the inner streets, stop at a stop sign, and it starts running rough. My the revs sound like they are chugging, its rough. What could it be? I need to drive back 140km in the morning!
Does it feel like it has a misfire (One of the Cylinders is not firing)?
When did you last have a tune up?
When did you last fill your car with gas?
At what point while driving does this happen? Slowing down, accelerating, cruising, all the time?
What is the weather like there right now? Is it dry? Humid? Raining?
Weather wise, cool and fairly dry,
Last tune up - well as supposedly done by last owner last winter,
I just put in $20 of gas before leaving (before putting on the 140km),
And I noticed it as I slowed down, but as soon as I noticed it, it did it while accelerating and at all times now,.....
Ya I guess you could say its misfiring. Does that usually mean plugs/wires? (I've never driven a mis firing car before) but this to me would be how a mis firing engine would feel, I just tried it out again, its chugging (mis firing) but other than that driving ok.
I just youtube'd misfiring engine and got this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=2rE7K7mauHo
this is very similar to what mine sounds like, so I believe it is mis firing, and btw its not showing a CEL light or anything else weird
... I'm also guessing EGR valve. First, just inspect the vacuum hoses in this area for something obvious .... maybe a loose or split hose end. The EGR valves are subject to carbon buildup, which affects performance, and also, they have a vacuum diaphragm, which sometimes becomes brittle .... at least that's what I have found on other cars. ... Not sure if it can be effectively cleaned .... probably a lot of internal carbon fouling.
... Get something ...maybe a bottle of propane or a can or starting ether, and check vacuum hose ends for vacuum leaks .... Engine operating temperature may be a factor.
... Another part which comes is discussed frequently the EGR vacuum servo valve ... guess you have one on the Gen 3. Probably have to replace this to check it. .... maybe get one from a salvage yard.
