3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
ok, well ive looked everywhere for this answer but i havnt been able to find a clear explanation anywhere. Heres the situation.
A few weekends ago, i was replacing the air freshener on my 1992 Gen 3 Camry, i was using one of the ones that you plug into the air conditioner vent. But as i pulled it out, it seems that the air freshener has destroyed the vent grille ...
Is there any easy way to be able to replace this vent grille?
I live in australia,
My camry is a 1992 Gen 3 Camry (executive unfortunately) and the vent is the right of the centre console. (Right hand drive means its the closest vent to the steering wheel)
Please help me, because this camry does mean alot to me.
Pics of the damage would help. But I'll try to help if I can. You can try to glue the broken pieces back together, you can check ebay, or a salvage yard for a vent grille that you can swap in, or a whole replacement panel that has the still has vent grille in it. Either way, the second option would requre removal of the existing panel.
The 2 center vents, and one on the drivers side is all part of the same piece that goes around the guages and Heat/AC controls. Your best bet is the junkyard. All the models should have the SAME piece. Only exceptions being the cars without the Power mirrors and other features have a plastic piece snapped into the hole, which can snap right out to make way for yours if you have them.
BUT, I think that YOUR 1992 Camry is the Gen 2 still, while OUR 1992 was a Gen 3.

Your best bet is to go to the wreckers and get one from there. The entire plastic panel that the vents are hooked to. They WILL break if you try to just change the vents.
Also, the rectangle next to the hazard switch is for a clock. 90% chance, the wiring is all there, plug included. So when you go to the wreckers, see if you can pic up a clock to pop in there. It should be nothing but screwing it on and putting the plug in. Thats how it is here in the US with Toyota's anyway.
Where in Aus are ya? I have a friend in Melbourne that knows some of the junkyards around the area there.

heheh well just to be an idiot ill just flip them pictures in paint haha!
thanks for the help guys, would it be ok to also quickly ask, how would i go about fixing my roof lining? its drooping and it kinda irritates me.
The truth is, well being an executive model, it doesnt have any bells an whistles, and i know the car has way high mielage but something in me just wants to make this car something really respectable.
its not 100% mine, its my parents but they dont drive it much and i use it (no need to pay petrol or anything, its awesome!)
but yeah, ive always just wanted to make it look like how it should as if it was being sold today, thinking about adding rear speakers as well seing as there is none.
OMFG, you do not have rear speakers?!?!?!!? WOW! You may actually have the wiring all there for it. My Grandma here has a 1995 STRIPPED Corolla. Probably just like your Camry. I got bored one day and started to take it apart. The wiring for the clock was there, the connectors for the speakers were there. May be similiar on your car, so check. It may be fairly easy.
For the roof lining, in the US, a lot of people will get a larg sheet of the lining from the internet, along with a special adhesive for it, and make a new one.

yes, no rear speakers, behind the rear seats its just flat. But upon opening the boot to the right i think it was, there are some wires, i assume they are for the speakers and maybe the bootlight, i could take more pictures if you would like to help me out?
