3rd & 4th Generation (19921996 & 19972001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hello, I'm a newbie to the Camry.
I was wanting to get a 3rd generation one, and I would like automatic (b/c this would be more about cruisin). The mechanics of automatic look alot more complicated that manual, and articles hint that it's more complicated than the motor. Is it reliably rebuildable? If anyone did it what did you pay?
I would think if i started a camry project than the transimission would be something to think about if I bought an old 3rd generation one.
i would really like to know about this also actually...i know oil cooler is a good idea...how about torque converters and shit, and the bulletproofing...i have the gen 4 1mz with auto tranny...

Well...yes, automatics are more complicated than a manual. Reliably rebuildable? Yes, if whoever is doing it knows what they are doing. However, it does take time, and isn't cheap. A proper rebuild of anything is never cheap. "Good work is not cheap, cheap work is not good." An automatic transmission, IMO, is much easier to maintain than a manual. No need to pull the trans, swap the cluch, reinstall the trans, and adjust here and there. Just drain, refill, and you're good to go. If the trans is still shifting smoothly, not leaking, quiet (no grinding, or whining noises), and doesn't "hunt" for gears while you drive, and the trans fluid isn't dark as coffee, or smell burned, then it's a safe bet that the trans is in good condition. In which case it doesn't need a rebuild. Just something to think about when you test drive a potential "new-to-you" gen3.
ya i actually watched that episode during lunch...only one problem, its for chevy engines and trannys...FWD is a whole new story, thought the exact same thing lol...

rebuilding an auto is VEY time consuming and i wouldnt advise it unless u are very patient or know what ur doin already. rebuilding an auto is also quite expensive. i had the one im my old muscle car(before computer controlled) rebuilt and it cost me 1200, that did include some performance parts. id expect the same or more for a camry one.
shiaaat...haha, question: there is someone on these forums selling a Kaaz LSD for the 1mz for 1,500...que es esto? i know lsd....but for FWD??? I kind of like my ability to smoke the piss out of my tires into turns if I want to lo....is this tranny stronger?? like for a turbo project?

u especially want and LSD on a FWD. when you launch, despite the majoity of the weight being over the wheels the weight transfers to the back, the LSD ensures that both front wheels are getting power so u get better grip and thus a better launch.
i got a 94 I4 and i had my auto tranny rebuilt for 1400, took a week and a half cause one of the seals didnt arrive on time, but it's been running great, it shifts a little late between 2nd and 3rd but no biggie at all
i had my 93' V6 tranny rebuilt totally, everything but the core (big metal housing) was replaced and its perfect.. only cost me 330$ done in addison IL near chicago, but im sure you can find a place anywhere in the US. but you may have to call around alot
