3rd Generation Transmission Problems

Hi, I drive a Camry 96 model 220 si with automatic transmission, It drives well except for a problem with the transmission shift change, when put into drive it takes off fine but as it changes to the next gear the rev drops and seems as if changes into the 3rd or 4th gear, as it takes while to built up speed. Once it reachs reasonable speed it maintains it without a problem but until I need to stop or slow down and then take of again and the Overdrive function doesn't work anymore. The gears just doesn't seem to change respectively 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th. Could anyone please advice or if anyone has experienced similar problems.

Check for transmission error codes. I'm not quite sure I understand your problem exactly but checking for codes is a good place to start.

If you shift it through manually does it "fix" the problem?
