Oh Deer!!

Dang.

Coming home last night and a deer appeared out of nowhere. Was doing 50mph when I saw him. Was on a 4 lane with no divider. I was in the far right lane. Hit the brakes and swerved to the left as far as I could without going into the oncoming lanes. Traffic coming in both oncoming lanes. He was running on an angle from right to left in the direction I was moving. Not sure how fast I was going when I hit him. Maybe 25 or so. Caught him around the shoulder with the right front corner of the car. His head whipped back and grazed off the hood. Thought he was going to hit the windshield but he didn't. He ran back off the right side of the road at that point and disappeared.

Fortunately, there doesn't appear to be a lot of damage. I'm going out to get some estimates this afternoon. I think the hood can be polished out. The front right fender is caved in a little and there's a crease in it with cracked paint. Also a very slight ripple in the passenger door that you can see on the right angle. Oh, and some deer hair stuck in the rub strip on the passenger door.

All in all was very lucky. Nobody hurt. Minimal damage. But, came so close to avoiding him that it's really aggravating that we hit. The car was pretty pristine until this.

Probably saved somebody in the oncoming lanes from hitting him head on at high speed.

Always worse than it looks. Got my first estimate. $1650.00

Didn't realize til after I posted earlier that the front quarter panel was pushed in to the point that it was causing the passenger door to bind. I hadn't opened that door since it happened.

Said they'd have to replace the quarter panel. The ripple in the door can be massaged out. Said they'd have to remove all the trim from the door in order to paint/blend back from the quarter panel properly.

Looks like we'll be making an insurance claim after all. At first glance I thought maybe it would be cheap enough that it wouldn't be worth the $500 deductible.

Still going to get at least 2 more estimates.

Woohoo.

Yay deer. I'm dreading the day I hit one of the huge four legged roaches with the Celica. That's gonna be bad...

Same here, whenever I drive home from work around 10-11PM every night doing 50, I know it's bound to happen sometime, as it happened to my dad before.
