3rd Generation poor gas mileage

I know there have been several threads and I read a lot of them. My gen 3 95 le 4cyc only gets 22mpg 70% city/30% highway. I used to get 26-28 but than the mileage dropped and hasn't gone back since. I have changed the spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, and primary o2 sensor within the last 5k miles. The oil was just changed 3k miles ago. Tires a pumped to 34 psi. Any suggestions?

I get less than you...usually about 20-21 mpg with about 80/20 city/highway. My parents used to get over 400 miles to the tank...i can barely squeeze out just over 300. I dont drive with a lead foot...i usually keep it under 3k RPMs unless entering interstate.

I was getting about 19 mpg..but one day i sprayed some TB cleaner in the TB while the engine was running and it improved a little. I think I need to remove the TB and do a thorough cleaning of the IAC, EGR, TB, etc. to get my mileage up.

What was the color of the plug insulator when you changed them, white or black? Engine idle OK, how about power? Does overdrive engage? An injector or cold start injector may be leaking.

The plug insulator was a bit yellow. Just a little at the top edge. The rest was white. Engine idles perfect at 800-900 and doesn't bounce. New thermostat too. Overdrive engages. How would I test for an injector or csi leaking? Wouldn't I smell fuel in the engine bay?

Stillrunning posted that he had found evidence of leaking injectors by having his oil tested for excessive hydrocarbons. As i recall, he said that he removed the injectors, had them reworked, and that fixed the problem ...

blackstone labs is a place where you can get your oil tested. they send you some test tubes in the mail and you send the oil back to them and they give you your results. it cost around 20 bucks.

maybe i should go get my oil tested.

since youre in washington, has the temperature dropped much? colder denser air will cause the engine to consume more fuel. about now is when my fuel economy starts to drop, but picks up again in spring.

Try pulling the negative battery cable and letting the car's ECU reset. It's a free chance at fixing it...

How long does the negative have to be disconnected?

Not long, maybe 30 seconds. If you lose your radio presets then it was long enough.

Just pull the ECU's fuse for the same effect.
