3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Well my exhaust leak has gotten bad enough that I will probably have to fix it before I get the car inspected. I believe the manifold has warped or craked, because the leak sounds like it's coming from the manifold gasket area.
I remember looking for a manifold or header for a Corolla that had a cracked manifold, and I was able to find them for like $50 (Shorty header that can go on the stock exhaust system)
I've checked my usual haunts and can't find any headers for my Camry. Is there a place where I can get one for pretty cheap that will work? I have the 5-sfe engine. I don't really care about the sound too much, although it would be nice to have a deeper tone. I just think a manifold from Toyota would be a lot more expensive than an aftermarket header.
Ripp and Bosal made headers for the gen 3 5sfe camry, but both have been discontinued. Your best bet would be to go custom or to modify a set of 5sfe MR2 headers.
the Bosal headers can still be bought, but they are around $500
and i think the Celica headers actually require less modification, since the engine bay is much more similar ... however, the headers you find for a Celica are usually cheap ebay crap that crack ALOT!

the celica headers would be just as crappy as the MR2 headers if they come from ebay...
Basically in this situation, I think it would be best to replace the manifold with one from a junkyard.
^ i wasnt disputing the quality ... i was saying that the Celica's engine bay is more similar to ours than the MR2's, so i think the amount of modification needed would be less [i think the radiator support is the only thing in the way on the Celica's - otherwise, our engine bays are nearly identical]

meh... i personally wouldnt try to mod headers from another vehicle- the quality will suck and in the end you wont really gain any power... it will just get louder.
Coming from experience, headers dont really make a difference on the 5sfe. Unless youre going to supercharger it, save yourself some time and money and go with the stock manifold.
Yeah, i'm just gonna check the junkyards for a manifold that's in good condition. Thanks for the help guys! i didn't know the Camry had so few aftermarket options
