3rd Generation door locks

one of my rear door lock actuators has failed. I removed the door panel and attempted to remove the clips holding the rods but could not fit my big hands in. Has anyone done this job who could give me some advice. Thanks Hartman

I just did this on my camry last weekend, picked up a actuator for 10 bucks. All I can say is to be patient. There is a piece of metal that run from up near the top of the door down most of the way that kept on getting in my way. It unbolts with a nut on the outside facing part of the door panel and then it can be folded away. If you can shine a light in there somehow, you can take a really long flat-headed screwdriver and pop off the clips if you can't get your hands in there. I was able to do the ones towards the top of the door by hand but needed a screwdriver to get in there far enough for the ones that were closer to the actuator. the rod that runs to the door lock itself, you might be just as well off leaving it on the actuator (disconnect it from the lock latch by the interior handle) and disconnecting the clips connecting it to the door. That's what I ended up doing to get the assembly out.

just wanted to say thanks to renmike concerning the inner door post. I about had a come apart attempting to remove the locking mechanism on my 2001 camry's rear driver side door. sort of disheartening to get everything unbolted and start to remove the lock and realize a large piece of metal is in the way for no apparent reason. anyway i know the intent of the post was not to necessarily help with the problem i was having but it did so i just wanted to say thanks. great forum
