4th Generation IAC / Spark plugs help GEN 4 5sfe

Hi All

Camry i4 1999 - 156000m

I had a rough start issue . So , I cleaned my IAC , just spayed in it .. My Idle became very stable , however a little high. I took entire TB and IAC .. I cleaned IAC again (I did not take plastic part off ) .. When I assembled my IAC and TB back .. I have normal idle as far as RPM .. However , engine vibrates a bit .. I can see it also RMP jump somewhat +/- 10 .. (before cleaning it did not jump at all )

So My question is :

Could it be that curb cleaner (I sprayed a lot ) resulted in some kind of deposits on my spark plugs (have platinum OEM plugs - only 25k miles on these plugs) and therefore my engine is vibrating a bit ?

Should I buy new IAC ?

Should I reset ECM .. When I first started my car after reassembly of TB and IAC .. my engine almost stalled and vibrated a LOT for first few seconds . I've read somewhere that I should have reseted ECM before starting my engin ?

How do I reset ECM ?

Thank you

If you are still running on original spark plugs, you should probably replace them, and your plug wires are probably due to be replaced as well. Use Denso spark plugs and wires... that's the O.E. company that supplies them for Toyota.

Oh cool, you've already done the good thing then. I'm not sure how you would reset the ECU, and I'm not even sure if you can. Any help with this?

If you want to reset the ECU you should be able to disconnect the battery (usually the neg cable) for a couple of minutes and hook it back up. It takes about 50 - 100 miles of general driving for the ECU to re-learn everything.

On that note, how much have you driven since using the carb cleaner? It might take 5 - 10 miles to get the carb cleaner out. Also, was the "carb" cleaner rated for throttle bodies? I understand that there are some that tear up the inside lining of the throttle body somehow (They are supposed to be plastic friendly I believe). If you used a standard carb cleaner it may have damaged something.

My TB is actually all metal (some kind of ) .. I used SynPower and Supertech , both are 02 safe .. I am not sure about plastic ...

I am so tempted to replace spark plugs (its $12 each at my stealership)

I have to agree with Kep on this statement. Just drive the car for a while to make sure all the throttle body cleaner is now out of the intake. Chances are the problem will go away on it's own.

If you really want to reset the ECU (which is probably not necessary) remove the negative battery cable and then step on the brake pedal.

Well , I've been driving for about 200 miles .. It does not get any better . Yesterday I took negative cable off (did not do brake pedal ) . It did not help ..

I am thinking spark plugs got deposits or my IAC is malfanctioning (when I was cealning it , i used cloth and scredriver to clean behind a little moving 'door' . I did not take plastic part out of IAC - maybe I should have , it had some yellow paint marks on one of the screws , I fugured its calobarated os something )

I have dilema , should I take plastic part off and clean it again ? Should I buy new IAC or should I get new plugs ?
