Question about overdrive

I've been driving around with the OD on for a while. Will this harm my car in any way? I heard somewhere that OD helps save gas.

i think it lets you get to the last gear so you don't do 3000 rpm on the 3rd gear going 40mph. BUT if my understanding is incorrect- feel free to correct me.

From my experience, when you turn overdrive off, the car seems to eliminate the use of 4th gear, limiting your car to three gears. Not very ideal for the freeway, because if you're cruising at 4000 rpms in 3rd gear, you could be saving a lot of gas if you're in 4th gear at 2500 rpms.

The car is designed to operate safely with the O/D system constantly turned on. A ECU controls actual O/D gear engagement based on RPM, MPH, etc. The driver can only turn the system off, not cause it to engage if the ECU has not already done so. Most drivers keep the O/D system turned on unless pulling a trailer, going up long hwy inclines, etc.

Having the O/D on helps increase MPG by lowering engine RPM's.

Thats it? I was doing 3300RPM's in 4th today, Too fast.

O/D is turned off mainly for passing at highway speeds.

My car knows exactly when it needs to shift down into third. Turning the ECT helps it alot too

i leave my on too. it is recommended by the manufactures to leave it on. so dont see any harm of leaving it on. some times i dont even turn it off and floor it and it'll go into the right gears.. talking about the ECT, havent used that button for a while till monday night when i was racing a mazda 6.. it felt good seeing him play catch up. =D
