3rd & 4th Generation (19921996 & 19972001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
driving home from work the other day and for some reason my car just lost power and every light in the dash went on. I had to force the car to the side of the road while it was slowing down. I shut it off for a few min. then turned it on and everything was fine. It's a 94 camry with 119,000 miles on it. I was just wondering what could cause something like that, especially because last week it just went in for a tune up.
The same exact thing happened to me twice with my '94, where the car just died, but i was able to start it up after. No CEL afterwards however. Has the timing belt been changed recently? (Although thats most likely not the cause)
I'm going to take a couple of guesses here on things that go out when they heat up. First one is the fuel pump. Weak fuel pumps have a tendancy to quit when they get hot. The second is the coil inside the distributor. For both of these items you can drive to a mechanic when the car is running and have him test these items. For the fuel pump he will attach a pressure gage to the fuel rail and take actual pressure readings and compare them to spec. For the coil he will use a digital volt/ohmeter and again compare his readings to the specs in the manual.
thanks for the responses. I found the print out from the tune up I got last week.
New spark plugs (platinum) denso double plat
new pcv valve
high press. fuel inj. filter.
clean and oil K&N filter.
and everything thing else wasn't engine related like wipers and nuts and bolts. do you think anything he did could of caused it. I don't think so but maybe there is something I'm over looking.
the high pressure fuel filter, was it installed correctly?
how much time did he take to clean and reoil the K&N air filter? If he reoiled the filter too much, the oil can mess up the MAF sensor.
I wouldn't know if it was, i don't do engine work. Where would I locate the fuel filter in the 1mz to see.
All in all I just want to know for personal knowledge, I'm actually looking at buying a new car very soon and if I can get anything for my camry I would like to sell it as a whole if not I might part it out.
I test drove it again to see if it would shut off on me and it was fine until I accelerated past 40mph then it shut off. Is it a speed sensor problem or and Alt. problem?
Have you checked for codes even though you are not getting a CEL? Also, if the problem is repeatable: Is it shutting off at a certain speed or RPM range?
This will happen if the crank sensor is going bad. Sends a bad signal to computer and will shut everything down. Took me a while to figure this one out on my "92.
a bad alternator will kill the battery on the car so the car probably wouldnt start again once it stalled. (plus wouldnt crank once it stalled)
when ive had a bad crank sensor, the car would go in limp mode so it wouldnt drive above about 35 mph and wouldnt rev above 3k RPM, but it never shut down the car, it would just stumble.
