4th Generation ECT Fans Relay etc

Hi I drive an Aussie Camry 2.2 1999 model - been reading the threads and came across one where both radiator fans were on all the time even at starting in the morning

Apart from the relays which could be shot, what other reasons could there be - please advise

thanks

Fan switch located on bottom of rad. Test it. Do you have A/C?

Relays, switch, or a wiring problem. Toyota designed the system so the fans will run constantly if any of the control components fail. Pretty damn smart.

i just went throught the same thing with my 97 camry 2.2L

my symptom was radiator fan always on when ignition key is at "ON' position, regardless of AC on or off.

there are two places you can diagnose

you can download the service manual from the link on this site

http://www.camrymanuals.com/manuals/99/Coolant.pdf
page 31 on the coolant service manual from above link

4 relays at the fuse box, main fuse relay, fan#1, fan#2, fan#3 relay, test them with a 12V battery and volt meter, very easy test, you pull out relay, apply power to the relay according the manual instruction, and check for continuity, and when no power applied, check for continuity.

the next place is the ECT sensor at the buttom of the radiator, mine is on the passenger side, you can trace the wire disconnect the plug at the driver side of the radiator, then use the volt meter to check the continuity of the ECT radiator sensor, i think under normal temp 181 F (83C) or below, there should be continutity, and 199F (93C)or above, there should be no continuity.

my problem was the ECT sensor, i replaced with a new one from dealer, around $100 for the sensor, and now the radiator fan is on when the engine temp reaches a certain temperature.

if you follow the diagnose instruction, you should able to pinpoint where the trouble spot is without guess and buying the wrong parts.
