Shift Nob is being stupid

OK! so here is my deal.

The button for my shifter nob is kinda being stupid. It takes about 5+ tries to get the button to go in so I can shift into reverse drive, all those fun things. I have no idea what is wrong with it, and it is really starting to get on my nerves. My dad things it is all spring work in there. If so could a spring have moved?

Now I know my old roommates `92 Camry has some type of shift lock or something on it, but my `95 does not have one.

Any ideas?

your 95 should as well...there should be a little plastic cap-type thing on your shifter assembly...if you pop that out, you can jam a screwdriver in there to shift the gears

but, I would say that there's probably something wrong with the shifter itself

you can always take it apart to take a look

Just take the shifter off.
A few screws and it pulls right out.

Just don't break the wires for the o/d

It's probably not you shifter at all. I think it's the switch at the shifter that only gets it's power when you apply the foot brake. It's a safety feature so you can't put it in gear unless the brake is depressed. So, lift up the console where your shifter is and with the ignition switch on ,press the brake and see if that safety switch moves so you can shift or press in the button. If not then either the switch on the brake pedal is bad, or the wires going to the brake switch is broken or disconnected or the safety switch at the shifter is bad. Hope this helps.
