3rd Generation need your opinions, gen 3 with intermittent CEL but running well

hi guys, what do you think of this?i have a 4cyl gen 3 1994... everyhting running well except that sometimes my CEL would come on while driving and would turn off after a while. it hasnt stayed on long enough for me to be able to diagnose it.

so one day i pulled over right away when the CEL came on, turned off the engine and did the paper clip method for obd1. i got a code 71 "egr system." my emissions inspection is due this month and i'm hesitant to go knowing the CEL can come on and off anytime. but more importantly, how do i fix this? which part of the egr is commonly at fault? should i just clean/replace the vsv, egr?

thanks

Yeah the best way to diagnose a code like that is to either clean out both the VSV and EGR or replace them. But yeah, you have the basic idea down.

I too, have a CEL code 71 on my 91 Celica GT-S. Car runs fine. Comes and goes. My smog is due this month also and I was going to reset it before taking it to the smog place but afraid it will come back during the test.

Did you fix your problem?
