I'm almost done installing my new speakers but I need a nice sub and amp to go with it. I'm not looking to spend a fortune on this, just one amp and one sub. I need some suggestions of what to buy, I'm really unsure here. Could anyone suggest a good quality/price amp and sub.
Also is crutchfield.com a good place to buy from, if not where should I order?
Thanks a lot.

1000W RMS in the trunk :P
I got lucky and was able to buy a sealed box containing two used 12" Kicker CompVR subs for $100. Then I added on a Pyramid PB-2600 amp ($100, 300watts RMS) and haven't had any issues, despite the amp being under-powered (I really should be using two of these amps...).
My Dual XDM7610 head unit came from Crutchfield, and they included evreything I needed to set it up. My friend bought most of his car's sound system equipment from Crutchfield, and he too has been very satisfied with their service.
depends what u want in the system. the larger the sub the lower frequency it will be able to play, but it wont do the highs well. the best is to have a mix. say one 10" and a 12". that way u will get a wider bass range.
u want loud? modest? me personally i liek a modes system so ive always run a sub-1000 watt amp and 1 or 2 subs. id also recommend a capaciter but u have to be carful with them.

from what i have heard, all it does is just cancel each other out. and like he ^^ said it all depend on what you listen to. I have had 2 crossfire CF2 in a seal box in mine and didnt like how it sounds so got ride of that got a 2 12 planet audio in a custom ported box to 37 hz. also if you dont tune it right it wouldnt be using all the potential is has. my 500 watt system owns my friends 1100 watt system.. and when looking for am amp, always look for the RMS rating not what it says on the amp itself. people always miss interpret that.

do you want a sealed or ported enclosure? How much room are you willing to give up? What are your goals, spl or sql (pressure vs quality)? I wouldnt mix sub sizes, a 10 is a bit more punchy but i like 12s.
I personally am running a ported 12 type r with about 600wrms and im pretty pleased with it but I think I might be changing to a Fi Q or a TC sounds sub sealed sometime
IMO, Crutchfield is an exellent place to buy. They really know their stuff, they have great customer service, they guarantee their products(i.e. if your not satisfied you can return them), and their prices are competetive with Best Buy and the likes. The only place I've found stuff cheaper is eBay, and then you're taking a much bigger risk so you have to weigh cost vs. risk.
As far as what sub, you haven't really provided enough info to make a suggestion. It depends on your goal.
Do you just want some nice tight bass for your own listening pleasure, or do you want to rock the people in the car next to you at the stop light?
What kind of music do you listen to?
What's the rest of your system?
If you call and talk to a Crutchfield advisor, they can help you pick something based on questions like these and your budget.
If you just want some nice tight bass without blowing the budget, Rockford Fosgate makes some inexpensive systems with a sub already installed in a ported enclosure. Just add the amp of your choice.
If you want better quality sound than that, Polk Audio's MOMO line of subs is excellent for the price, but you have to get the enclosure and the amp separately.
You can check both of those out on Crutchfield.
Again, it depends on your goal and listening preferences.
I'd give em a call and see what they can suggest. It's low pressure, and you can get some advice and then just say you're not ready to buy just yet if you don't to make the purchase on the spot.
I was thinking of building my own box for the sub, so I really just need the sub. I really like hearing the low sounds so maybe I'll go with a 12" sub. I am the kind of person that wants it to be loud if that helps I listen to a mix of rap/hip hop and some rock so that doesn't really help. Room is no problem, it'll be in my trunk which is empty atm. The budget is like 300-400$ (amp+1sub). I love hearing the low frequencys that make everything shake
Can anyone suggest something?

from what i have heard, all it does is just cancel each other out.
then ya may heard wrong friend, each sub size can play a different range of frequency so thay cant cancel out as far as i know, ive had this setup and it works great for me. 8s and 10s play highs well, 12s and 15s+ play lows better. any comp system has a variety of sizes unless its simply a blow out ur eardrums system.
id say if 1, then a 600-800 watt amp would be good with a 7-800 rms sub. i personally like MTX and rockford fosgate but ive never really used much else. i know there are better brands out there then them but it may push u ou tof ur price range. for what ur lookin for id say u want 1 good sub and amp.
ported box is better for playing hip hop/R&B and sealed is better for rock or other kind of music with double bass.. if you want a low freq then a 12 would be better and if you can have a local shop build you a box that will be synchronize with your sub and tuned the freq as low as possible without killing the quality. unless you know how to do it then go for it. and if you can add a Cap to it, make it sound so much better. (just my opinion)
BTW, my is tuned to 37 hz and loving it, rattle my car/trunk like crazy (dynomat soon to come), sets off alarm, and the reactions of people's face when they are inside are priceless. =D

my friend did a sealed tc-9 sub running about 1k wrms to it and that thing hits hard, at least as hard if not harder than my type r with a huge ported enclosure, definitely something to look into
also try woofersetc.com, crutchfield is almost always overpriced
12" Sub in cabinet = $179.99
Amp = $199.99
----------------------------------
Total Shipped $379.98
I realize you said you were thinking of building your own box, but here's just a reference. The RFs are pretty reasonable considering they ship it, you plug it in, you're done. The box is ported, tuned, nicely finished, etc. If you REALLY want to build it yourself, go for it. This is a nice "lazy man's" solution though in your stated price range.
