'92 Camry making really odd noise from rear wheels, please help
Hey,
Yesterday I drove on of my friends home, when I was parking at his house (in reverse, just beside the sidewalk) I heard an odd crunching noise from the back tires. I got out and looked around but theres no visible damage. Later I went for a drive and the noise was gone. Then I was at a stop sign and I started up and the noise started. It seems to be something to do with the tires because as I speed up the rate of the crunching increases. Then after I get going pretty fast it goes away...It sounds almost like theres a piece of metal rubbing on some more metal of the wheel...But it doesnt do it all the time...
Any ideas? FYI the car is manual, and I looked under the car, around the wheels, I can't see anything.
Thanks

i have something similar on my camry. the rear drums on my car are rusting pretty badly, so its spreading apart the metal and its starting to rub on the heat/dust shield. but it only does it every so often. more often when its warm outside.
I've made a discovery...The noise only seems to happen after the car has been parked in one spot for a while. Like when I use it first in the morning, or when i leave school after the day... Maybe this will help diagnose the problem.

I had a similar noise on my 90 Camry with drum brakes. It turned out that one of the springs had broken and a piece got hung up between the pad and the drum. Right before I took the rear brake apart I felt a slight drag along with the noise.
It's starting to be more frequent, almost anytime I leave the car sitting in one spot it will make the noise for the first minute or so I'm driving it. It really does seem like it may be coming from the drum brakes or something in that area, but what would explain it only being for 1 minute after the car has been sitting?
Anything I can look for? Should I just take it to a garage? TBH I don't feel too safe with it doing this.

When parking...do you use the parking brake?

If you are not comfortable pulling the wheel and drum off and possibly having to reassemble the drum brakes (and springs and the like) then yes, take it in and have it looked at. I would hope that any mechanic could do the basic check for you in less than an hour and then if there is a problem, what ever the repair cost is. Some places give you a lifetime guarantee on their parts (however, labor is usually not included). Check your local Toyota dealer for any coupons that may be in effect.
I don't use it when parking but I do put it on once I'm parked.
One time though, around the same time the noise started, I was parked, then decided to change to another spot and while changing spots I left the hand brake on :S I made it to out of my spot in reverse but when trying to go forward I stalled the car, then when trying again and feeling something was wrong I noticed, took it off and pulled in... Maybe it has to do with this accident?

Looks like you need:
1) check rear break pads
2) check parking cables
3) check rear discs (if you own V6 model)
It is likely one or all of it need a replacement.
Any small service shop ( like Canadian Tire ) or dealership could do it. for a chip.
My best guess in meantime when you use you parking brakes it eventually will lock rear wheels /by experience/.
Piece of metal stuck in the tire? But then the noise would never go away at any speed...
Jack the wheel up, spin it and listen for the noise. If you are still not getting a good idea of where the noise is from then put the parking brake on a notch or two just for fun and see if the noise changes, if it does its brakes. Sounds like wheel damage, broken hubcap, or brakes need to come apart to be looked at for something broken
