check engine light problem

Hi all,

i have camry 1999 model vehicle, as i am in the the state of texas i need to pass in the emission and state inspection test ,my problem is when i run my car more than 2 miles the check engine is turning on if the light is on when the engine is running the state inspection will fail, i went to to auto zone as per thr diagnosis its EGR system fault[(exhaust gas recirculation) the ecm has detected too little flow on the EGR system probable causes are 1)blocked passage on EGR System 2)Failed EGR Valve 3)EGR Solenoid Faulty 4)Failed EGR pressure pensor where applicable 5) failed EGR Positin sensor where applicable

i think its too expensive to fix it,can any help me in this regard?

replace the sensors and solenoid. hopefully that would be the problem, i dont have much experiance with these cars, but i know quite a bit about 4runners, ussually its the sensor. if not its a cheaper than whatever number 1 entails more than likely.

you can take out the EGR to clean off carbon built up inside the EGR passage/or buy a new EGR replaced...Normally, the sensor doesn't go bad...the EGR go bad so the sensor detect (ECU send to your processor) then the check engine light come one. EGR it's easy, to take it out...if you do take it out, replaced new EGR 's gasket, but the gasket body throttle still reuse because it's metal....cleaned or buy a new one to replaced...you will save more money...when i took my EGR out of my car, i have to take body throttle out then before i can acess to EGR. i think you will need 23mm brach but not sure your model..my car 96 toyota camry le 4 cylinder...look for the size of bolt and go get some tools....you will need 10 mm sockets (to take 2 bolts behind EGR) and 23or 24 brach (long pipe that connect to exhaust intake) to take the EGR (pine) that connect behind your exhaust system and your EGR. dealer for EGR cost high...try buy parts online OEM (toyota) price...cheaper than dealer..

I'm with 1996camry. Remove and clean the EGR first. You didn't give your engine. On my 2.2 liter I used a 15/16" crows foot with 1/2" drive to remove the EGR from the pipe. On larger fasteners english & metric can be interchanged. Get some PB Blaster as well so soak nut overnight. When cleaning you will need something to scrape the carbon off the inside. Just be careful not to damage the valve and seat. You can use some carb cleaner to help dissolve deposits. Don't get cleaner on the dashpot.

What on earth is a 23 brach?

Anyway, the troubleshooting procedure from Toyota is fairly simple for the 0401 EGR insufficient code.

You can clean the EGR valve if you want, but thats probably not the culprit. Its probably that the EGR modulator has torn and no longer will hold vacuum. Pull the modulator out, and I believe you suck on the bottom port (use a vacuum pump, or at least wipe it off first) and see if it holds vacuum. If it doesn't, you need to replace the EGR modulator. There are some other tests for the system, but I stopped there because I had found my problem like many others on this board.

Try a search on this. There was a really good in depth technical thread about this a couple of months ago on a 4 cyl camry.
