4th Generation tail light warning

hey, this is my second post and first problem. My taillight warning light is on, but i don't have a tail light out. i think its a short, because i have two 12" subs and every time i put my system up it comes back on and resets when i turn the car off. Where should i start to look to fix this?

The device which turns on the tail light warning is the light failure sensor ... L3, located in the trunk area .... see p. 32 of the Gen 4 electrical wiring diagram ... online repair manual.

The several wires which actually go between the tail lights and the sensor are green with an orange stripe.

Inspect the wires, move them around, see if there is any chafing or possible breaks.

That is a Light Warning, not a Tail Light Warning, if yours is like mine. It could mean one of your parking lights, brake lights, back up lights, or head lights (do you have side lights?) could be out. I have even suspected the dome light might be included but I am reasonably sure that it isn't. If all of your lights work and it comes on then start taking each bulb out and clean the socket and the base of the bulb. Corrosion can be enough to set off the sensor.

The wires that dc_98_cam mentioned are also suspect.

After all of that you might consider replacing the module that dc_98_cam mentioned. If you pull the module and open it up look for evidence of charring. That usually means that the module is dead. However, whatever caused it to heat up is still there. If you just replace the module the new one may fail soon.

The wiring diagram shows that the dash combination meter warning light could be for either the tail lights or the stop lights.

Definitely a good idea to remove all the suspect bulbs, examine the sockets and respective connecting wires. .... Look for signs of moisture, corrosion, or anything to prevent good electrical contact .... metal contacts should be bright and shiny.

If you find moisture, something is letting water get inside ...maybe use an electrically amenable grease. ...
