3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I was changing the oil and put 4 qts instead of 3.8 qts. When I check the dipstick it is a few mm above full level. Is this bad for the engine or should I not worry about it?

Reason: eh
most ppl will tell you it's ok. I did the exact same thing once, overfilling slightly. The oil light came off, and I drove around for like 50k without a problem. But its annoying to see the light, and I re-did mine.
Something to add. I was driving on slopes/hilly area. If your diving in pretty much flat terrain, as long as there is no light, you're fine.
For over 80 thousand miles, I put 4 qts in my 2000 Camry I4. Never once did I ever have a problem with the oil light coming on. If you wanna talk hills, the first 40 thousand miles the car drove up and down the hills of San Francisco. The next 40 thousand were up and down the hills in the High Desert and up and down the hill on I-5 between SF and LA.
I just had my car serviced today. And my mechanic put in 4l. So i am assuming its okay. Bit surprised to learn that the oil light would come on if the oil is over... I always thought it would only come on if you didn't add enough.
Unless you have an oil level switch the light is activated by pressure, not amount. 4 liters is less than 4 quarts. A little over fill won't hurt if you think that when you start the engine a lot of oil gets pumped throughout which will lower amount in sump.

Thanks for everyone's input. I can drive with peace of mind now. I was just concerned because on page 224 of the owner's manual, it says to avoid overfilling. or the engine could be damaged.
I put 4 quarts in my 98 5SFE engine for over 100,000 miles with no problems. If you let a hot engine drain for about 45 minutes to 1 hour when changing the oil and filter yourself, it will take 4 quarts to bring it to the full line. 4 quarts will not harm your engine. I did this until somebody rear ended the car about a year ago and totaled it. My 07 Camry with the 2AZ 4 cylinder engine takes 4-1/2 quarts to fill it back up. Now that is a pain. Did you ever try to put 4-1/2 quarts of used oil in a 1 gallon (4 quart) milk jug?

Mike - Used laundry detergent containers are so much more convenient! They can hold at least 2 camry oil changes.
Now, try changing the oil in my 330Ci - thing takes 7 quarts! I usually use 2 of the 1 gal windshield washer bottles for that. Theyre slightly more robust than milk jugs.

Yes, its great that you're paying attention to things like these. Like everyone said though, a little over (or even a LOT over) is okay. Just don't go putting 7 quarts in

2AZ capacity is 4 quarts, 5sfe is 3.8, and 3sfe is 4. Going a little bit over shouldnt be too determintal. I generally go with an even 5 on my 1mz and it barely reads over the mark. It's capacity is 4.8. I'd just rather not have to deal with accumulating oil containers with leftover oil till I got a quart to use.

2AZ capacity on the generation 6 is 4-1/2 quarts including the filter. Not sure on the generation 5.
