3rd Generation Factory Radio & CD help!! PLEASE!!

Howdy all. I have a 1992 Camry with a factory am/fm cassett in it. I want to add a factory CD player to it. The CD player plugs into the back of the radio but when I do this I get no sound from the speakers. If I turn the volume up all the way I can barely hear any audio from the radio, cassett, or CD player. Because I can hear something I know all 3 are working, they just are not working properly together.

I had read that there is supposed to be a switch on the back of the radio that needs to be flipped from the *P* setting to the *D* setting(for dealer installed option), but there is no switch on my radio.

I am in need of any info anyone may have on how to correct this problem. Is there a switch elsewhere?? Does something need to be added to get them all to work??

HELP!!!

What is the model number of your radio? And is this an external amp issue?

And of course, modern aftermarket radios are dirt-cheap and have tons of nifty features like USB ports in front, plays .mp3s, .wmas, .aacs, .atracs, have direct iPod connections, etc.

Well ya cant get any cheaper than FREE. (one of my fav 4 letter words!!)

Anywho....model number on radio is A16404. It has a plugin on the back to accept a round plug from the CD player. EVerything seems to match up but very little audio when hooked together.

As far as an AMP problem.......I dunno. Thats kinda why I am in here to find out what the issue may be and how to check or correct it.

I read in another forum that the amp was under the center console.....nada thats the air bag brain. BUT....I did find another plug that is not being used under there. Is the amp supposed to mounted on top of the AB brain??

the amp should be under your passenger's side seat to the best of my knowledge....take a look there

Yeah the amp, if there is one, should be under the passenger front seat. If you dont have one...you may need one. This might be the problem you are having.

Lo and BEhold!!!...... There is NO amp under the seat. Could this truely be the problem?? Anyone have a spare and wireing for cheap?? I guess thats the next step. Unless someone has a different idea here??!!

Logically, at least in my mind, amps just boost power and by hooking up the CD and radio there should be at least some audio just not window shattering. Any thoughts??

If there's no amp under the seat, then you probably don't have the "upgrade" stereo system such as came in my '95 XLE.

My XLE had the "upgrade" AM/FM/Cassette system with the the external amp under the seat, but it did NOT have the CD player which was an additional option.

My '95 LE on the other hand had the basic AM/FM/Cassette system with NO amp under the seat and NO CD player either. The head unit had it's own internal amp.

If your stereo worked ok before you plugged the CD player in, then the head unit must have it's own internal amp.

There's like a 13 pin plug on the back of the head unit. Is that where the CD player plugs in?

I still have the head unit from my XLE. I may still have the head unit from my LE in the basement somewhere. I'll look and see and compare the two.

Also, I'm just on my way to my dealer to pick up my Sequoia from being serviced, so while I'm there I'll ask my parts guy if he can give me any info on the stereo hookups.

UPDATE

OK, well, the parts guy at the dealership couldn't tell me ANYTHING.

You may want to post this over in the Audio/Video/Security forum too. I'll see what else I can find out.

ANy help is appreciated....THANX!!

The CD player I have utilizes a round black plug that plugs directly into the back of the radio head unit. An internal amp kinda makes sense. The more this thread goes on the more I am thinking that it is a lack of AMP that is the problem.

Anyone with any other ideas??

takes some pictures of it b/c it sounds like your describing the antenna hook-up to me. if its an LE Camry then those didn't come with amps just the cassette radio. I still have my factory radio so I'll look myself.

There's a black 13 pin plug on the back of my head unit for plugging in a CD player. I'm guessing that's what he's talking about.

What you have is a non-premium system which never included a factory amp underneath the passenger seat. The problem isn't that you need an amp to run it. The problem lies elsewhere. Did the radio ever work without the CD player plugged in? If it did, then the CD player is causing negative feedback to the factory radio, thus, causing all your sources to not function. I don't know where the notion of antenna hook-up comes from, but it's NOT.

If you unplug the CD player from it...does the sound come back?

Radio and cassett works fine untill I plug in the CD player. Then audio from all 3 systems is very faint. If I turn the volume up all the way I can barely hear any audio but enough to know all 3 are working as far as playing but barely any sound from the speakers.

The black plug I am refering to is the round plug the CD plugs into the back of the radio head unit.....it is not the antenna.

Is there a way to test the CD player by itself to see if it does have a problem and cancelling out the head unit??

BTW....it is a Camry LE gold edition (if that makes any difference)
