96 Camry 4cyl starting issues - now DEAD

Hello All,

Bought my Camry back in August and shortly thereafter it stranded my wife. It would turn over and fire but not stay running. Well, eventually I got it to keep running and got it home for an extensive tune-up. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, fuel filter, etc. Was running fine until this weekend.

It started doing the turn-over but not keep running thing, but would eventually keep running after the 3rd or 4th time. No problems at all once it was running. Turned over like the battery is new (it is only 1yr old)

Today it stranded my wife again, although now there is NO power inside the car - nothing. Well, the "door-open" lit up briefly, but no more. I checked under the hood, wriggled the battery contacts (tight) and tapped on the relays, when I went to turn it over I heard a pop (sounded like a relay, not the solenoid) and all dead again.

Obviously it seems like the battery is the obvious thing to check first and I was unable to put a jump on it because wife and 2 small kids needed to get home. But I'm wondering if the battery would have anything to do with the turn-over but not keep running problem anyhow.

TIA for any help

Rick

Sounds a little like the situation in the following link. Check out posts #9 and 14:
New Battery - Won't Start

Similar indeed. Thanks for the link. I had scanned that thread previously but missed post #9. Unfortunately I'm thinking this means 2 problems - I may have to rely on a shop since I've got no extra time this week.

I will update when I can.
