3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I own a 96 camry LE , 4 Cylinder auto, with 110 K miles.
I have a problem with my Camry. For short distances, everything is fine. If I drive like say 60 miles on the free way and then stop the car, there is a burnt smell and smoke coming from the engine compartment.
When I open the hood, I can see the smoke for like 10 to 15 min (not heavy smoke )... after a while, the smoke is gone.
What do you think might be the problem.
The car doesnot overheat looking at the temp gauge...and it only does that for distances of more than 30 miles or may be more than 30 min of operation..
^^ Sounds like the problem...and it probably stops because after the car is warmed up, the gaskets and seals may 'swell' a little, closing up the leak.

You mean the problem is "Oil leaking onto manifold"...can be a reason...
Whats the solution for that?what needs to be done on the car.

i dont understand the above ..if you read my post...I am saying , i can see the smoke ***after** 30 miles or more on freeway and I stop after that drive on freeway.
I do not see the smoke when the car is started for the first time and you saying the smoke will stop because the car is warmed up and seals the leaks doesnt make sense...
...When I open the hood, I can see the smoke for like 10 to 15 min (not heavy smoke )... after a while, the smoke is gone...
I was going off of this statement...that the smoke goes away after 10 to 15 minutes.
Soooooo....it seems you have contradicting statements...on one hand..you say it lasts for about 10-15 minutes and then goes away...while on the other hand, you say it does it after 30 minutes or 30 miles of driving.
Anywho.....you need to look closely around the engine and under the engine and see where the oil is coming from...is it the back or front of the engine, bottom or top, left or right or center of engine.

This is where a clean engine compartment helps a lot. You will be able to notice just a little bit of oil and maybe recognize where it is coming from. Check with your auto part stores in the area. They may have a dye to add to the oil which you can then see with an ultra violet lamp and some yellow glasses. Some stores may even be willing to "loan" you the lamp and glasses.
I have the same problem, cept it's not 30 mins/miles/or what not it's over 4.5-5 RPM's. When I stop the car, it smells like something burn, and no oil is leaking that I can find.
I'll recheck manifold.
