My 96 camry LE 4 Cyl 2.2L. shakes and rattles

HI, i am from Irving TX
I just bought a 96 camry LE 4 Cyl 2.2L.

The engine was fine but i only found out it had a few problems days after i got it.

It was bought from a private seller

Here are a list of things i had changed.

door handle (broken by previous owner)
master brake cylinder
rear struts
front and rear engine mount

after changing these, i noticed that there are a few problems

vibration felt in the front when accelerating from stop, rattling sound heard

car shakes felt when accelerating above 60mph

wonder if anyone here can advise me what to do

thanks

Can you be more specific as to the noise when accelerating from a stop? Is the vibration only when accelerating, how about when the car is steady at say 65 mph? Try swapping the front and rear tires and see what effect this has on the vibration. Try making slow speed left and right 360’s and see if you hear a clicking noise from the front of the car.

The vibration was only felt when accelerating. When i free wheel, there is no vibes. Likewise when i am doing 65mph. So long as i step on the accelerator, the vibration is felt. But if i dun, even at the same speed, there is no vibes.

I have already done an alignment as well as swapped the tires.

360's on left and right makes no clicking sound, i was told that if there is a clicking sound, it could b caused by a ball joint.

Anyone knows of a good mechanic that charges reasonably in Dallas Irving area i can go to? I already poured more than a grand getting fixing those that i mentioned earlier, its already alot more than i expected to come up with.

I heard there is a particular thai workshop which was recommended but i cannot remember the name

The shaking and vibration are likely alignment, balance and/or suspension issues. An alignment shop should be able to figure out which. You said you already did an alignment. Did you do this yourself or have it done? If you did it yourself maybe there were suspension parts that you didn’t check first. A shop should have known better.

If you want to try and inspect the suspension parts look for loose connections (especially at the rubber bushing inserts, ball joints, stabilizer bar links, stabilizer bar retaining bushings, etc...). Jack the wheels up and grab each wheel at 3:00 & 9:00 and again at 6:00 & 12:00. Try to flex the wheel back and forth at each position. It should be firm. You shouldn't be able to wobble them.

If the high speed shaking is severe enough it could rattle several things. The vibration at slow acceleration may be a loose dust cover on the inside of the rotor and caliper. Once my cotter pin holding the axle locking nut was loose and rattled at low speeds. Maybe more information would help us figure it out.

Luck,
Kep

Thanks Kep!

This is very informative.

When i did my alignment at Firestone, they did mention that my bushing are worn, the lower control arm needs to be replaced.

Movement in mounts and struts are weak with excessive bounce.

replacing the control arm cost 245 for parts and 184 for labor, the struts cost 139, strut mount 124 n labor 239...!!!

Man! its 858 for the arms and 766 for the struts! A total of almost 1.7 K!!!

i am looking for a much much cheaper alternative but i got no mechanical experience. i was hoping not to spend more than 500 on these..... sigh....

looks like i bought a lemon

It bothers me that they were "able" to complete an alignment with these kind of deficiencies. Unless you told them to go ahead with the alignment against their recomendation I would try to get a refund from corporate. Once you do get the parts repaired you will need another alignment!

If you are not the one that will be fixing the car you might check around with some of the independent mechanics to see if they would be willing to use parts that you provide. You could then shop around (eBay is my favorite) for discounted OEM new parts. Good used parts might also be an option but since you won't be able to put in new bushings yourself or recognize a good part then that is not a real good option. A few mechanics will use used parts but not many. Either way, if you provide the parts or if he uses used parts the mechanic will not likely stand behind the repair.

Hey Kep,
Thanks again for the helpful advice. I'll go ard and source for the most reasonable qoute from various mechanics.

But if anyone here can recommend me one, i would very much appreciate it.

Even though i might have bought a lemon, i still take pride in it and would wanna fix it right. Cos i wun sell a lemon to another.
