Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Someone stole the F-ing catalytic converter off my car on Tuesday while I was @ work! I started it up after work and the car was crazy loud. I though my exhaust broke so i drove it home. I had today off so i jack the car up to see whats wrong and there is about 3ft of exhaust missing including the converter. Looks like it was cut off with a sawzall. WTF??!!?? Jim Barkley Toyota says $775.29 for cat and $112 for labor. I filed a police report but i don't think they really care. Anybody else have this happen to them? I live in Asheville, NC.
this is a pretty common theft lately .... theyre worth enough money for someone to go thru and steel them and sell it for metal (i think its the metal that they want, cant remember)
have it done aftermarket and it will be 100x cheaper - you can get a Magnaflow Catalytic Converter in the For Sale section, i believe ... or get one from PlanetMagnaflow.com or Magnaflow.com .... and have an exhaust shop do it
should be no more than $350

Due to the use of precious metals including platinum, which is worth up to $1,200 an ounce; palladium, which can fetch $320 an ounce; and rhodium, which can go for up to $6,400 an ounce on the market, catalytic converter theft is on the rise. (Note, however, that the loading of precious metals in a converter is low, and seldom over $50 per converter at 2007 spot prices). The problem is especially common among mid-90s to present Toyota sport-utility vehicles and trucks, due to their high ground clearance and bolt on catalytic converters, which are easy to remove. Welded-in converters are also at risk of theft from SUVs and trucks, as they can be removed within five minutes by means of a battery powered reciprocating saw.

My friend drives a small '91 Toyota pickup, and his cat was stolen while he was at work, too. This was in Irvine, California. His dad payed $800 to get a new one installed.
Mostly for the precious metals inside. Metal thefts are on the rise because of increasing prices. In this case they were after the platinum. However, copper theft is very common also.
People steal anything with copper. There have been reports of people making off with miles of power wire for light rails, copper water and AC conduits, telecom and power wire to houses, and renters taking the plumbing with them.
