RPM Problem

I am not sure if this is normal or not....but while idling or waiting at a red light, if you move your steering wheel left and right, your RPM goes up and down also. now is that a normal thing??? I have been driven other cars, but non of them do that.

That's normal. It's the power steering. It's fine.

I don;t know why, but considering how Reliable the 1992-2001 Camry's are, I'd be more worried as to why the OTHER cars DON'T do it.

most cars DO adjust the revs UP as you turn the steering wheel. the reason for this is because as you turn the steering wheel, you are placing more load on the engine as it needs to provide turning power to the power steering pump, so there is a switch that tells the ECU to increase the revs when load is placed on the system.

additionally, the design of the hydraulic power steering system is inevitably flawed by concept as it provides the most hydraulic advantage at high rpm's (when it is not needed) and the least hydraulic advantage at low rpm's (when it is needed most, i.e. parking in a tight spot)...

so be happy that the revs go up as you turn the wheel.

Something's wrong if the RPMs don't go up.

Another question regarding this: I have a 200i M/T 96. While standing still, GENTLY pushing the gear lever against a position (EG: 1st) without the clutch in, you'll notice a drop in engine speed as well. I'm thinking this is normal as well, as of the hydraulic clutch?

yeah mate, that's you wearing the crap out of the synchro rings on your manual transmission as you're trying to jam a stationary shaft into gear against something that's spinning at 600rpm. not a smart thing to do at all. why on earth would you want to do such thing? it's normal, yes, but it's not clever.

I know, I know. But when coming to a stop at the light with the car out of gear, I usually rest my hand on the lever, thus just SLIGHTLY pushing it against the slot for 4th gear. Nothing major, but just pointing it out.

(PS: My car idles at around 850rpm where you mentioned 600...)

well, at 850rpm you're doing even more damage than at 600. sorry mate, it's a bad habit and it's doing your gearbox no good.

Yip, I agree. I quit doing that around two months after getting my car, but just thought that it might be relevant to the thread nonetheless.
