3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I'm installing a new battery in my '98 and thought of using one of those 9 volt battery minders in the lighter to retain computer memory. Then I realized the socket is switched, so that idea won't work. Any ideas on this?
The radio receives 12V DC power from the Dome and Cig/Radio fuse. The Dome fuse is for the memory power. Wire up the new battery to the terminals with small diameter wire, then swap batteries. Or find a 12DC source such as a trickle charger and substitute this for the wires. Have someone help you to hold the cables or battery.
just hook up a set of jumper leads to the battery terminals and another battery (on your parents car/spare battery?) kind of like jump starting the car. then swap the battery with the jumper leads still hooked up to the helping car or battery.
why do you need to do this, car alarm memory or something?
This is why I keep watching this thread. I hope its for more than just the radio settings. Cuz if you're doing this JUST to save your radio presets....you're one LAZY bastard!

Would it be for the airbags? I always wondered how long you could keep the battey disconnected be for the AB system would not work, and how does the dealer reset it?
Bear
Ive changed the battery in my car. It doesnt take long. Shoot..ive even had the thing disconnected for several hours and have had no issues with air bag lights or anything.

ok this is not recomended but......start the car then replace the battery fast,it will still run with out the battery, you gat like a 1 min or so to reconect the terminals and then tighten the hold down bars, like i said some may say it dangerous, but ive seen many do it and nothing hapened, make shure pos and neg never touch

he said it's not the recommended method. why get so aggressive about it? if it's so bad that a reply needs to be finished with such colourful words, then back it up with reason. maybe you can explain why it is more dangerous to do it on a 90's car than on a 70's car?
I would do what another member posted. Use jumper cables connected to another battery, or a portable 12V power source and connect it to the battery terminals. Then remove the connectors from the existing battery while the 12v power source is still connected, and then switch them over. Don't take the battery out with the car running, i've heard it can wreck havoc with the alternator and electronics.
