Help with driver side axle

I am in the process of removing the drivers side axle. From what i have been reading in the Haynes manual. It says that all you have to do is just pry the axle out of the shaft. I have tried and it seems like it has snap ring or something. Because it is not budging a bit. By the way i have a 95 camry with the 5f motor. Also i just have this thing on jack stands. Any help or hints on how to get this thing out would be greatly appreicated.

Yeah, it pops out. There is a snap ring on the splines of the axle inside the diff, but it'll pop through if you give it a good solid pry. Lacking a pry bar, you can also put a chisel or big screwdriver in the little ridges of the inboard axle carrier (the one that butts right up to the diff) and give it a goo whack with a hammer.
One tip: it's good to have a second set of hands holding the axle when it comes loose. If the thing doesn't come straight out there's a chance you can shred the axle seal.

There's not much to wedge a pry bar on the axle, especially from below. I had to use a three foot pry from above with a metal spacer against the engine to act as a fulcrum. It was tight and did SNAP out. Don't even think about leaving the old seal in, it's not worth the risk and labor to redo the axle just for the seal. Replace the seal with Toyo replacement. Take note of the depth of the seal backing in the housing so that you can install the new seal to the same depth. I think Haynes calls for a new snap ring. I would do that as well.

What a coincidence, I just did this yesterday on a 94. In the factory service manual they actually show the pry bar as the lug wrench that comes with the spare tire. I was having a hard time prying the axle out too with a regular pry bar then I said, what the heck, pulled the lug wrench out of the trunk and with one whack with a 2.5 lb mini sledge hammer it popped right out. Dont forget to drain the transaxle first or you're in for a big mess.

Thanks you guys for the help. Your suggestions worked. The axle popped right out. I used a prybar through the topside of the motor. I did remove the breather box hose to give me a clear path. Thanks again for your help.

Sorry to bring this back from the past but this crap is not working for me. My damn hands hurt. I used my tire iron thing and went from the underside and wedged it in and hit it repeatedly. The crap did not work for me. WTF am I doing wrong? Meanwhile, I wanted to try the above method but there's a black shield protecting it. I have a 94, auto, 5SFE
