Fuel filter replacement

So does this sound like correct procedure for fuel filter replacement for the 92 camry?

- ?? Disable fuel pump. Start engine and allow to stall.
- Remove fuel tank cap
- Disconnect battery
- Remove air filter housing (optional)
- Remove banjo bolt (with flare nut wrench) from top of fuel filter (with rags for cleanup)
- Remove hose fitting from bottom of fuel filter (with rags for cleanup)
- Unscrew filter support assembly
- Attach new fuel filter to assembly and reattach to firewall
- Reattach bottom fitting and top banjo bolt
- Reconnect battery
- ?? Enable fuel pump. Crank engine for several secs to get fuel into lines

I dunno what car you have, but on my Gen 4 I4, the fuel filter was under the air box so removing it make it a lot easier to change the fuel filter.

Use flare nut wrenches instead of reguar open wrenches to prevent damage to the lines.

If you pull the EFI fuse you won't be able to start your car to get the fuel out of the lines. The EFI fuse powers the ECU. My Haynes manual for the 92-96 Camry says to just slowly loosen the banjo bolt on top of the filter to relieve the pressure and go from there.

Thanks touring, I specified flare nut wrenches.

Um, yeah, good point 95Pimp. LOL. Hmmm ... any other way to empty the lines? In any case, should I also loosen the fuel tank cap?

Yes you should loosen the gas cap to get rid of some pressure. As far as emptying the lines, don't worry about it. Just have some rags or a pan to catch anything that drips out. It will all evaporate quickly anyway.

Ok 95Pimp, will just use a few extra rags. Thanks for the help. I'll let you know if I have any problems.

I don't have any flare nut wrenches. Can I use a socket wrench or is a flare nut wrench even better for seating?

You won't be able to get a socket around the lower gas line, and have to use a flare nut wrench because an open end wrench will cam out.

I guess I'm making a trip to the hardware store to add to my limited tools (not a bad thing). I would assume the bottom fitting is the same size as the top fitting, but I will check right now. 95Pimp, do you think I should remove the air filter housing prior to starting? If so, any quick pointers?
