2000 Camry LE 4cyl whines & CEL

Lately I've been having a whine come from the car around 1200 to 1900 RPM. Under slight accelaration, but typically while I'm just cruising. I've checked the power steering and brake fluid and everything looks fine. Any ideas? I also have a CEL on and the code given was something for EVAP. I reset the computer a couple times and it comes back. So I have those two problems. Would the EVAP be the PCV?

There is a Gen 4 section of the online repair manual that deals with diagnostics. ....Maybe it could provide some immediate details.

The code is PO440 and says EVAP Emission Control System Malfunction and says the cause could be: Vapor pressure sensor malfunction, Fuel tank cap cracked, damaged or incorrectly installed, Vacuum hose blocked, cracked, torn or disconnected, Hose or tube blocked, cracked, torn or disconnected, Fuel tank damaged, Charcoal canister damaged

The gas tank cap is fine, not sure what else to check

are you sure the gas cap is fine? that code is commonly caused from a bad gas cap. a visual inspection of the cap probably wont suffice. i just had to replace the cap on my wifes liberty because of that same code. ive had this same problem on a couple of other cars as well.

as for the whine noise, check the tension on your accessorie belts (the alternator and power steering) and see if they are too loose.

If you have properly installed you OEM gas cap....
then take a look at the link here ... post #1:
GEn 4 camry CEL fixed!!!
Maybe buy a can of throttle body cleaner, disassemble the EGR, and spray all holes, apertures, and orifices liberally.
Wait a while for everything to dry, reassemble, and see what happens.
Inspect vacuum hoses in the vicinity for loose ends and tight connection.

Just an idea though.... not completely sure it will work.
