3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Need to repair a falling/sagging headliner on 92 camry. I want to do a thorough job, so no tacks. I would like very detailed instructions on removing the headliner when sunroof (aftermarket) present. Do any of the service manuals have this? Does anyone have a link (thread), instructions, or pics? Is headliner glue readily available at most auto parts stores? Recommendations?
I have seen headliner kits at Autozone - has the fabric and the glue - but I don't know how well they work. I'm sure other auto stores would carry something similar.
Another option would be to pick up long, slender pieces of wood from a hardware store, they may be in the craft section. Maybe five feet long, 1 inch wide, and very thin. Then brace this wood from one door to the other if you find something to hold the ends. Or use the screw tacts. Personally, after trying these methods (my older cars, not my current '95 Camry which has a good headliner) as well as removing the cloth and just putting duct tape on the cardboard material (didn't hold for long), I would just rip everything off and go to the bare metal. Will look better than a sagging cloth.
Out of curiosity, do you, or did a former owner, smoke in the car? I think that there is a direct link between smoking in a car and falling headliners - something about the smoke eating the glue away, as well as your lungs of course.
Yeah, would like to know how good these are. I was thinking of just re-using the old fabric. Still need to know how to get the headliner off without breaking something.
yeah same here.. my headliner sag like an old women breast.. and is your sunroof cover all crusty? like the materials is all breaking loose?

Well, that took about 40 minutes to get the old headliner off. Man, it is just totally corroding. If I hadn't removed it now, it would have removed itself in short order. My car is caked with black particles ... assuming this was some sort of insulation stuck to the roof? The aftermarket sunroof was obviously put in M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E. I figure I should take some pics, and then remove the cloth from the weak support foam it is attached to ... then find a piece of similar fabric, pin old to new, and cut accordingly. Suggestions? Anyone know what I should replace the insulation-like material on the roof with? Is there something that is good for noise and insulation?
I am going threw this very thing. Except my Camry has the factory moon roof in it. and it is HUGE!! There is NO cardboard or hard board ANYTHING over top of headliner. As far as I can see it is stretched into shape and glued to foam board around edges and around roof light. Then held in place with rubber edge molding around moonroof opening. I also have a ton of what I call sound foam all over my car. I am trying to vaccume it all up before it gets ground into the fabric somewhere. So far I have gotten price quotes from $125 to $300 to replace the headliner. I just may have to try this on my own for that price. ANyone have a good light grey one for sale in good shape before I tackle this the hard way??
Yeah, sky, it is like a foam backing that is holding the fabric separated and giving structure around the edges. Most of mine was cut away when the previous owner put an aftermarket sun roof in. Looks like he did the job himself, because it is a total CLUGE. Same rubber edge molding on my sunroof. I think your "sound foam" is the same as my black particles (sponge) that is coating the entire car. I think we need to find a good replacement source for similar stuff, hopefully with better longevity and better insulation/noise properties.
Save the money, and spend some time doing it yourself. It is really just a bunch of low grade crap up there, so anything you do will be better. I'm just taking great care to take lots of pictures and keeping everything intact until I can make sure I have the right procedure to replace the fabric. And unlike the idiot who put it up last time, I will be sealing the edges of the fabric so there will be no fray, and I will be adding support to the existing foam.
Anyone have suggestions on how to repair the foam board headliner? Mine has a huge hole in the middle to accomodate the sunroof, so really there is only a 1-ft strip that goes all the way around. I was thinking maybe reinforcing with fiberglass patching (like for a surfboard).
Hi, Lineinthewater. I'm also going to have to replace my Camery's headliner and read your posts. I've actually done this before many years ago on other vehicles and was just searching for good prices on the materials. I found this website with the complete headliner/glue kits: http://www.stockinteriors.com/headlinerintro.asp, but local auto shops may also have it. These are generic kits that you cut to the exact size of your headliner. The new material has the foam backing already married to the cloth. When I did this before, I had to remove the entire cardboard headliner from the car, clean off all of those bits of foam remaining, then apply the glue and then the new headliner material, let it set, then trim off excess. The hard part is replacing the whole headliner without losing your temper. Now, if your cardboard headliner has been cut or damaged, you may have to repair or replace it or it may not fit properly. Once finished, this should last for another 7 - 10 years.
For what it's worth, I believe the foam/glue decomposes due to the heat the top of the car experiences, particularly here in the south. Most cars with this type of headliner eventually have this happen.
