4th Generation 01' XLE Head Unit Question! URGENT!!

I want to change the deck on my 2001 Camry and retain the stock speakers. Since I have an XLE the car comes equipped with JBL speakers. I just want to change the deck to get something with a USB drive, so I won't have to burn Cd's anymore. Thing is I've heard that I might lose some sound quality while getting a New HU (headunit). Thing is I love my stock tweeters on the camry and the fact how loud it is. I don't want to sacrifice loudness or quality for a new HU.

So my question is will I still be able to have the same sound that I have now with my stock JBL speakers, if not is got gonna be for the better or the worse with a new HU, Im looking at the the JVC KD-G830.

Thanks!

^ LOL at the above.

I haven't heard of ppl losing sound quality from changing out a HU, only gain.... So I won't worry too much if I were you. I know my sound quality was better when I got a new HU, even though its still crappy.

I changed to a "crappy" dual hu that was a few years old and the sound quality was MUCH better than the stock "JBL premium sound system"

just have them run the tweeters off same signal as the front 6.5's - make sure they use a high pass filter tho.

Hey there MOBB,

I have a 2001 Camry with factory JBL speakers too. I didn't think they sounded too good with the stock head unit. That's why I bought an Alpine CDA-9887 instead. The sound quality is phenomenal compared to stock since most high quality head units like mine have a built in equalizer so you can tune the sound to be clear and best sounding as possible. I can not live without an equalizer. It makes even factory speakers sound great, no need to get aftermarket ones. I noticed you were interested in the JVC head unit, but from experience I personally recommend Alpine as the first choice and Pioneer as the second choice. Eclipse makes great HU too, but they tend to be pricey compared to Alpine so Alpine is still better for the value and features it has. Also, if you get a wiring harness designed for Toyota cars, then you can just crimp it to your new head unit wiring and it will be an easy plug and play installation. If you connect all of the wires on the harness correctly then you will not lose the sound from your factory JBL tweeters. I did it for my car, so I know this for a fact. Hope this helps you on your project.

Thanks alot man, just the response I was looking for, i was looking into a JVC cause it had a USB plug in which I found very useful. Talking with some other people convinced me to strictly look into Alpine/Pioneer as you stated. There's just another thing I would like to ask you, Is there any difference in Loudness?? cause the stock deck goes so freakin loud, and i like loud I don't want to loose loudness, also the back speakers have trouble responding to bass at loud volume's it just sounds like shit, did changing the deck make it worse or actually did the speakers respond to bass better?

-Thanks alot for the info!

Hmm, i forgot about the fact that you wanted a USB port on your HU. Sony Xplod head units have USB ports too so you should check them out and see how their features and prices are. I've never used Sony, but it's just an additional option beside JVC. As for the loudness of aftermarket HU, it depends on the power. If you get a HU that has a 16-20W RMS internal amplifier then it can play louder than other HU, especially the factory HU. Don't look at max or peak Wattage because those values doesn't mean the HU can produce those numbers continuously. RMS wattage is the better indicator of what the HU is really capable for producing continuously. In terms of the bass response of the rear speakers at loud volume, it's most likely due to distortion. Factory speakers just aren't capable of producing strong bass, especially at loud volume with a weak power HU. Aftermarket HU are stronger so they can drive the speakers much better and there should be less distortion, hence clearer bass. But in my experience the best bass is from a subwoofer, haha. But anyways, in the end it all depends on what HU you want to get. Look into its features and make sure it has what you want.

I put a Sony GT410U in my '95 Camry this past June. It's not bad and for the price it was really good ($205 for the head unit and four new Sony speakers).

If you want to see all of the various models, go to Crutchfield and look at receivers. There will be an option where you can select USB and it'll only show head units with USB ports. And I *LOVE* my USB port, I just plug my flash drive into my computer and put whatever onto it, then plug it right into the radio, I can jump from folder to folder, then track to track within the folder. I can shuffle within a folder or all files on the drive. It's great!

That being said, Alpine may very well have USB ports on their '08 models which will come out in January or February. Their big change for '07 was to play .aac files (non-DRM), I'm pretty sure USB ports are next for them. Note that they already have external USB connectors but at an inflated cost ($150), plus they don't work well (per reviews I've read). For my '99 Honda Accord, I'm waiting to see what the '08 Alpines offer.

One more thing - right now Crutchfield is offering $50 off of a Kenwood head unit / four speaker combo. I know that you don't want new speakers in your Camry, but do you own another vehicle that could use new speakers? And there is a decent Kenwood head unit with USB port in front for $160 (regular price $180).

Digmycelica, take a look at this link for a better understanding of "head unit": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_unit
