Still no reverse lights :(

Well, i cut an spliced the wires in my trunk that were bending a little whenever the trunk was opened and closed, to no avail.

The part that I cut out didn't have any damaged wires, so I just spliced them back together. My single most likely lead was wrong.

The next thing I can think of to replace would be the reverse light switch on the transmission itself (the 5-speed, so it pokes out on top), but I'd like to find out if voltage is actually making it through the switch. Is there any easy place to find out if the circuit is being completed, or do I have no choice except trial and error?

I could pull out the switch and get ahold of a multimeter, but it's kind of a pain to get out as far as I can see, because there's a wiring conduit that runs right over it.

Anyone else had this problem before with the 5-speed? I know the old Camaros had a similar problem with the switch, but when it went bad, the reverse lights would just stay on all the time.

You're going to have to pull the switch connector and with a wiring diagram try to jump the wires to see if you get BU lights by-passing the switch. You'll need to find the power in wire and the BU light wire, unless the system uses ground to activate lights, then you'll need to jump ground. Start with a wiring diagram and use a test light.

Okay, sounds good. I'll have to pick up a test light and multimeter next time I'm at a store that carries them.

For now i'll just pull out the switch connector and put a jumper on it to see if that's the problem.

You don't actually have to work with the switch itself when testing for voltage. The online wiring diagram shows a red wire with a light blue stripe going into the M/T backup light switch, and a red wire with a black stripe coming out .... and then going to the backup lights. ... Either use a sharp pointed test lead to probe through the insulation ... or else scrape a small amount of insulation from a conveniently accessible point.

There is a location diagram ... showing approximately where the B/U light switch is ... p. 31 of wiring diagram for Gen 4. ... see part B1.

The M/T backup light switch circuit diagram is located on p. 136 of the online wiring diagram ....Gen 4.

Please edit your forum profile ... your signature should show the year, engine, trans, miles, and whatever else people are guessing about your car.
