Unhappy smoke upon starting :-(

Well, I hope it is not "that time...."

My 94 Gen3 with 187k miles on her is starting to belch blue in the mornings. No smoke after the initial burst of blue stuff, but definitely not good. I have put off changing the valve cover gasket closest to the firewall, and I just might have to keep putting that off if this is really serious.
Experience tells me that this is oil getting past the rings, but I wonder what happened to cause this, sine the car is treated pretty well. the longest I have gone between oil changes is about 6k miles, and the car is not run hard at all. It does, however, make lots of short trips, which would certainly aggro the situation.

Any advice appreciated.

Also could be valve stems.

sounds like leaky valve stems. i thought if the piston rings leaked, thats when you burn oil when the car is running and not just at the initial start-up. does you car use any oil in those 6k miles?
