3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi! XD My car is finally sent off to the smash repairs!
but now i have a new question. Something that ive used the search button for.
Well so when the care returns i shall continue my quest to make my parents Gen 3 92 camry executive (lowest trim model i believe) a respectable and maybe somewhat luxurious vehicle.
Now for the questions.
-Is there any way to gain any performance out of the camry but keep it quiet at the same time?
-is there any way to block out some extra noise from the outside?
and also
-Does anyone know anywhere that i can get leather-ish seat covers for the camry? (i live in australia BTW)
Thank you guys very much! Im only new here and already ive gotten so much help!
More power is hard to come by in our cars without making it loud, and it definitely takes large sums of money, even if you do all the work yourself. For quieting it down, look up http://www.secondskinaudio.com and look over the products, then go to the forum to get ideas. There are some really knowledgeable people there. On here, talk to ASG14. He's done the most deadening as far as I know. For leather, you could try finding leather seats from a wrecked camry and just switch the seats out, but you'd have to find one that was recently wrecked or very well taken care of as seats in wrecked cars go downhill fast. Also look on Ebay, stuff like seats may pop up from time to time you never know. Other than having your current seats recovered ($$$$) this is pretty much your only option, as leatherish seatcovers are going to look terrible.
I added sound deadening materials to my car (mostly mastic in the trunk). However, the biggest difference I got was from better tires. Some tires just seem to amplify noise in certain pavements (I had Falken Ziex ZE-512). I currently run Toyo Tourevo tires now, but I've had good luck with Michelins in the past also.

Hi tom thanks for your answer, i have recently got my tires replaced and i am content with how quiet the tires are, but what about the other noises? eg. wind noise, other cars etc.
My parents other car is an 06 Honda Oddessy luxury (australian the body looks alot different to the american ones) and well riding in the camry is absolutely nothing compared to the oddessy. so smooth, quiet and so comfortable. i was hoping to make the camry maybe atleast a little bit like that.
For the wind noises...you need to find out where they are coming from and tackle them one by one. You may need to replace the weatherstripping around the doors to get a better seal.
We found a noise spot in our Gen3 at the top right of the windshield! It's a good thing we need a new windshield. That will be fixed when it's replaced.

for sound deadening get some dynamat or other sound aborbing material(used in conjunction with audio systems). u basically place in in the doors, floor, trunk, rear deck and roof. it helps ALOT ive herd the differance, with anough of that stuff ull never hear anything outside. also get some aloy wheels to give it a classier look if u dont already, id suggest 16" to enhance it a little. tires are a big help in deadening sound too.
keep ur eye out for cars a the scrap yard with leather seats. seat covers are expensive and unless they are custom they will look and feel cheesy.
as far as performance, im assuming u have the I4 if ur think its the base model. theres not much u can do that will keep it quiet and be worth any money. if its a v6 then u could do some free mods that a member discovered here and it helps out quiet a bit without making the car louder. especially with the 3vz-fe(early US and Aussie engine)
It depends on what you want, it prob wont be too much worse as long as you go with a good set of tires but imo the looks are really worth it. If I were going to keep my camry for a good while I prob would put some 17 or 18s on it
Yeah, if you want the Lexus feel, you'd definitely have to sound dampen the doors.
I've seen some people add enough sound dampening to weigh down their doors to make them close a lot more 'stiff' and sturdy like a Lexus persay.
You'd have to try to pinpoint problem areas, but in general, to lower road noise, dampening the floor and wheel wells are good places to start. But doors and trunk is important as well. The roofliner is forgotten much by people.

search sound deadening in the audio forum or prob better yet, google, there are tons of guides on the net and it is pretty much the same thing besides the fact that you will have to make different cuts to fit your door but thats nothing.
