3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
so at the beginning of the month i went thru some bs that turned out to be the ignition coil. Anyhow ever since its gotten colder out, it takes longer to turn it over to start... like 5-10 seconds. Well this morning it was coldest ever and it refused to start period after continuous attempts! so get this.... later this afternoon when it was somewhat warmer, this POS starts up fine and perfect w/no delay!
WHAT IN THE HELL IS THIS?? IIRC i recall hearing something about a coolant temp sensor or whatever causing this? i am getting sick of the petty lil baby problems w/the car. it has had over $1k put into it in the last 2 months!
thank you everyone, i am and have currently been searching for this problem and not having much luck!
I'm new to Toyotas, and haven't looked at my fuel rail yet, but I assume there is a pressure check service port that you can hook a guage to to make sure the fuel system is pressurizing appropriately. That's where I would look next.
When you are having the problem check to see if the "Check Engine Light" (CEL) comes on when the the ignition key is in the accessory position and the engine is off. It should come on. If it doesn't, the EFI relay is suspect.
My 90 Camry had similar problems. The EFI relay was one factor. A bad ignition switch was my other problem. I had no spark until the car warmed up.
Don't know if this is your problem or not.
Luck,
Kep

+1 fuel pump may be going out. I had to replace my mom's in her altima because it was doing the same thing.

Well it is a 92 after all. Want no problems buy new.
Check your engine coolant temp sensor (not coolant fan switch on rad). If you have a cold start injector check that as well. There is no fuel rail port for pressure check, you'll have to buy a banjo bolt adapter for the fuel filter connection. If this were happening cold or hot I may suspect fuel pump, but not right now.

does your camry have a tachometer? when this problem arises, can you see if the tachometer needle goes up slightly as you crank the engine?
if it doesn't, then it's a spark problem.
i just thought i'd throw this in to quickly eliminate a spark problem. i used to have a similar problem in my gen4 celica and it turned out to be a faulty ignitor... drove me nuts for months trying to find the fault.
oh, and try to stay positive. investing money into cars is not a bad thing if you plan to keep it for a long time.
so where is the cold start injector and coolant temp sensor on the 5sfe? i may just replace both of them. it seems the car starts right up when its 60ish and around 55ish it takes long cranking. Any colder and turns over yet wont start period!
it has to be something to do with a cold start issue. ill just call toyota and see how much the 2 parts are.

Although the Gen 3 online repair manual doesn't have a Diagnostic Section, the Gen 4 Diagnostic Section shows a method of testing the resistance for the coolant temperature sensor .... Probably the same as the Gen 3. You need a multimeter with a resistance test and a thermometer of some sort.
