V6 HG Problems

Ok, I am 99% sure I have a blown HG in my 1993 XLE V6. The car has 276K. Is it better to have this engine rebuilt or get a replacement engine? Is this engine easy to rebuild? What are pros and cons of both? I would also like to know what this is going to cost.

depending on where u get it a used engine would be cheaper. if u were gonna do a rebuild then id suggest doing a full rebuild with rings, seals, new valve train components, ect. labor on a rebuild is what will kill ya and thats where replaceing the engine might be cheaper as well.

I'm in the same boat as you. The oil in the motor is milky already. It doesnt even crank anymore. I spoke to a mechanic at a reputable shop and he suggested that I replace the motor. He said he could just rebuild the curent motor but eventually it will cost the same as replacing and it'll be prone to a BHG again.

Yeah, I would just recommend getting the original repaired... like he said, the next engine could be soon in line for the same problem, unless you know it has had the gaskets replaced.

Mr. E,
Are you suggesting that if your mechanic rebuilds your engine it will be prone to BHG...or a replacement engine will be prone to a BHG? What did your mechanic quote you on a rebuild? Does anyone know specific costs?

If your heads are not warped, just replace the head gaskets.

in my situation, my mechanic recommended that the replacement engine would be better. rebuilding the current one would be a money pit.
