3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey all, I've looked all over, and I know this has been covered loads of times, but I couldn't find definitive answers.
I've read that the light is only available through Toyota, and is soldered onto the mount, is this true?
I've also read that there is a bulb you can replace this with on the super LEDs site.
And finally someone mentioned that you can get a mount for a 74 (or 194?) and a 194 bulb and just stick that on. Is that a viable (probably what I'm going to do) option?
If so, does anyone know where they would sell the mount for the different bulb?
If you mean the "D" bulb itself on the Instrument cluster, it is not soldered in. It IS a Toyota only bulb, and it can be changed. I changed it on both my car and my Dad's. It's easiest to just get this perticular bulb at the dealer. I think it is like $7, which I know is rediculous.
Our cars have the bulb bases (mounts). Some cars (I think all US made) the 194 bulbs are soldered into the base, but can be removed to reuse them. I have heard the Japanese made Camry's have bulbs that just pop out. The 4 #194 bulbs and 1 of the #74 bulbs are for the green backlight of the cluster.
Now id you actually mean the Gear indicators bt the shifter itself (betweent he seats), it is just a pop out 194 bulb.

Yes, I meant the D bulb inside the instrument cluster, not the gear indicators on the floor.
I suppose I'd have to take a look to see what kind of bulb it is, then. I didn't touch it for years because I thought it was hard to access (my dad was going to be charged $350 to replace it from Toyota)
If I have to get the bulb from Toyota, do you have the particular part number?
$350? Holy crap you have one shitty dealer. The part is $7. My dealer is $100 an hour labor. they are charging $350 labor for something I can do in 1 hour taking my damn time.
Don;t have a part number. Go to the Parts Dept, and tell them you need the "small D bulb for the gear indicator in the instrument cluster". they will look it up in their parts program and order it. It;s a bit of a bitch to get the gear indicator out of the cluster, but just take your time with it and you should be fine.

I find it weird you guys keep saying it is a 194 bulb. On my 95 Camry LE I changed it a year back, it looked like a bulb out of a mini-MagLight, and the dealership said that they weren't made anymore. I ended up going to RadioShack and finding a similar bulb. Oh, and it was not soldered in, it just had the leads bent around a plastic plug. My car is a US made by the way.

The dash has 4 or so different bulbs. The 5 main bulbs for the backlight of the cluster are 4 #194, and 1 #74 by the Fuel guage. The small bulbs are dealer ONLY. Argue me if you want. I know this thing.

I'm not arguing, I've never opened anything, lol I'm looking to do a lighting revamp in the future, replacing all the bulbs i can with LEDs. I have to see what else I want though.
I'm just worried since I am completely new to cars (I've never even replaced a wiper by myself, lol) so I don't want to screw anything up, especially since I don't have a spare car.
The pic below is 1 varient of the bulb. there are several sizes in this shape/form. It will likely not work correctly with an LED due to light dispersal. Only bulb on 3 Camry's I;ve had go out was the "D" on all 3. Read the link below for the backlight bulbs and fitment in the cluster.
^ Yea that is the bulb that was in mine. The dealership near me said that those bulbs were no longer made and that you couldn't get them. I just found a similar (not the same) bulb from RadioShack, it's actually a little dimmer.
