3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So, I bought a 2.25" universal Magnaflow dual-tip muffler from eyeball96 for my '97 Camry V6.
Just got it put in my mechanic, cost around $70-80 or so, not too bad. So, I'll add a sound clip and some pictures later, it sounds great. It's a bit too loud at around the 3500-4500rpm range, but also pulls a bit better in that range, but at idle and highway, it's great.
I'm planning to add some sound dampening to the trunk area around the muffler to quiet some of that sound, it resonates a bit too much in the cabin. Would adding a silencer do much? Where can I find one?

na man, the magnagfow on the 6 is pretty loud, but just at certain rpms. my gen 4 has a 3" exhaust with NO res and it is guieter most of the time then my coupe was which has the exact muffler he put on. i dont know why but that sucker drones like hell. has a real nice tone to it though, congrats man, glad ya like it.
yikes why did you change then? magnaflow are generally quiet mufflers.. you shouldve stuck with oem if you didnt want it louder like that
Yeah, I thought the Magnaflow ones would be the most quiet one to get, the Greddy ones are pretty loud.
It's not too bad, just a bit of droning and resonance. But it is a bit loud at certain rpms, but it can be balanced if the gears shift quickly before reaching a high rpm.
On a side note, I filled it with premium gas instead of regular like I usually do, and it seems like the exhaust is quieter. Does that make any sense or is it just all me? Does a higher octane of gas affect noise of the muffler?
Just drove it at night on a cold day and pretty much all the suspension rattles, lol. I gotta replace the front strut mounts, and theres a bit of a clicking from the rear, I know one of the hubs is a bit loose on one side, would that make any noise?

Is it loud because you have the V6? I ended up changing my mufflers two times, the first was a Magnaflow XL, the second was straight through. They were all too quiet so I got the Apex'i cat-back with bigger piping.
for me it was only loud at low cruising RPMs and its not even that loud outside as u can hear from the clip. whats loud is inside, around 2K to 3K rpms under light to maderate acceleration.
now it may just be me but ive been around loud exhaust for a long time and its kind of anoying when cruising on the highway. but i thought it sounded great ouside

I have the TRD muffler on my gen4 V6 and it certainly sounds quieter with premium octane gas. It sounds the loudest with regular octane, however the acceleration sucks a**. I think with premium gas, the fuel burns easier and it can be compressed more before igniting so your engine is more efficient and doesn't struggle as much to accelerate. Thus, the sound is softer. I always try to use premium because I seem to get the best MPG and performance even though I lose some of the muffler rumble. When gas prices are too high, then I use plus octane gas instead. It actually gives a nice rumble from the muffler and still have better acceleration than regular octane.
hu. ive never herd of exhaust note changing due to gas selection. it never has in any of my cars. i suppose its possible if ur using a rating that is below what the engine is designed for.
